Today, I came across a TV series called "The World of People", which tells the story of a family in Jichun City, Jiangliao Province (presumably Changchun City, Jilin Province) in the late 1960s, the capital city of the province.

The protagonist Zhou Zhigang (a third-line worker in the southwest) and his daughter-in-law Li Suhua (housewife) have two sons and one daughter. Lao Zhou, a worker in the third line of the southwest, has only undergone one decisive change in his life, that is, he has changed from a peasant to the first generation of construction workers in New China, and their family of five has urban hukou.

In that era, almost 100 percent of China's urban people were facing or about to face the same kind of big entanglement, which was the "intellectual youth going to the mountains and going to the countryside to receive re-education from poor and lower-middle-class peasants" movement that they had never expected since they became urban people, and the old Zhou family faced the same problem. That's right! At that time, our family faced the same problem.

At the railway station, the daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law took the daughter and the younger son to send their husbands Lao Zhou and the eldest son, the husband rushed to Chongqing, Sichuan, the third line of the southwest, and the eldest son went to the frontier production and construction corps in a directional manner. My daughter did not quit one day and went to the countryside of Guizhou Mountain Ravine to settle down...

The mention of hukou caused me heartache. At that time, our family lived in a municipality directly under the central government, with a family of seven people, parents, three sons and two daughters. I remember when I was just four years old, my father came home from work and announced a decision: the family moved to the suburban countryside dozens of kilometers away from the city. Later, when I grew up a little, I understood that my father was responding to Chairman Mao's call to "evacuate the urban people to the countryside" and "the vast world of the countryside has made great achievements."

My father, who was originally the chairman of a trade union in a large state-run transportation factory, resolutely responded to Chairman Mao's call to go to the countryside! I remember that the day of the move was really lively and glorious, beating gongs and drums, firecrackers sounded in unison, the whole family brought big red flowers, unit leaders, street cadres, and neighbors from all over the road to bid farewell, the big liberation truck with trailer was pasted with a big red slogan, and even people brought furniture to send us to the countryside, and this urban household of seven people followed and became a rural household!

Although it is a rural hukou, we have no homestead, no farmland, and the house we live in is still the house of the old two people who have no children and no daughters in the local area, the old two live in one set, and our whole family lives in a set.

In the past, the rural grassroots were called communes, brigades, squads, commune male club employees were divided into 10 points, female club members were 5 points, no house and no land, we only relied on our father to work in the commune, sometimes welding, sometimes repair, the father took the work points is the female club employees scored 5 points, don't forget that a family of seven people only rely on these 5 points to live! The most difficult time is when the whole family has not eaten for three days, and the family gets together to hold their headaches and cry... (To be continued)
