Enlightened Bookstore

Shanghai Book City, which has been open for 23 years, has closed its store and reinstalled, saying "goodbye" to readers, saying that it is "only for better future meetings". I immediately thought of the Enlightened Bookstore, which is going to be ninety-five years old this year.

"I have not tasted steamed cakes in the morning for a long time. At nine o'clock, he took a tram with Mo (Hu Molin), Xiao Mo (Ye Zhishan) and Sanguan (Ye Zhicheng) to the Bund, and everything was revisited, and everything felt fresh. After Mo got out of the car, he walked in the middle of the vehicle, and tended to avoid it. Yu was unconscious, and he must not be allowed to go out alone in the future. From the Bund through Baidu Bridge, into the Hongkou District. Near the triangle small vegetable market, the stalls selling Japanese old goods along the road are compared to Hankou, which is particularly impressive. Choose to buy several pieces of magnetic lacquerware for home use, all of which are more cute than Jiangxi Magnetic, and the price is particularly cheap. I also bought a small leather suitcase, two pieces of Japanese people and clothes, which can be changed into quilt noodles. Mo Yi was tired of walking, slipped and fell suddenly, but fortunately was not injured. Yu Yijue's idea of not being alone is reasonable, and he must pay attention to it at any time in the future.

So take a rickshaw to the intersection of North Sichuan Road and Enter the Xiangjing from Yongfengfang. My shop rented six houses in Lizhong, and had a huge ceiling fee, that is, sub-rent and fandom. Xian Gong (Fan Xianren) moved in first, and Binran (Fu Binran), Xi Guang (Tang Xiguang), Shao Yu (Guo Shaoyu), and Miss Ouyang (Ouyang Wenbin) have also been identified as status and engaged in arrangement. The one where Binran and others live is Japanese-style, and the doors and windows are exquisite. The residents of the Pai Ding Yu family were still inhabited, and they moved out a week later, because they did not look at it. After sitting at the Xian Gong's office, before long, The Transfer Fu (Xu Tiaofu), Da Jun (Zhu Dajun), and Bo Xiang (Wang Boxiang) arrived one after another. Drink together. The matter in the store will be discussed later.

After the meal, Mo first returned to Xiafeifang. Yu and Boxiang, Tiao fu, Xiaomo, and Sanguan followed qiujiang Road to the west, and Japanese used goods were all over the place, and sellers and buyers were one after another, and the road was blocked. Yue Wusong Railway, fold to Baoshan Road southbound, through Henan Road, to Fuzhou Road Dianzhong. The road seems to be quite impressive, lively and better than it was eight years ago. Our storefront was moved to the east of the original storefront, and there was only one, which was not spectacular. The office part is entered after the original store site, and the old ones are stacks and dormitories. Tune the second and third floors of the guiding view, indicating that a certain seat is someone's seat, and the crowded house is narrow and crowded. There was a lot of walking, and I felt quite weak, so I sat down and rested.

At five o'clock, my sister is still a remnant of wine. I went to bed at nine o'clock. ”

This is a complete diary of Ye Shengtao on Sunday, February 10, 1946, copied from Yuz, and the full name in parentheses is the author's case. Ye Shengtao was invited by Xia Junzun to enter the Enlightened Bookstore. During the Battle of Songhu, the main store of the Enlightened Bookstore on Wuzhou Road was destroyed in the war. Ye Shengtao also moved his family west, moving to Sichuan, Egui and other places. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Enlightened Bookstore moved back to Shanghai, and Ye Shengtao took over the editing. This diary, which is the actual record of his return to the scene of life and work on a certain day in Shanghai, is concise and timeless, and it is especially interesting to read today.

A publisher that is not very large can not only find a place to live in and seek business in a place where it is scarce, but also provide a good place for fans and employees to the greatest extent. On one trip, when I talked to Mr. Shi Jingcun about his novel, I talked about the Enlightened Bookstore, and mr. Dai Told Me that when he and Dai Wangshu took the translation of "Daisy" and went directly to the Enlightened Bookstore, they knocked on the door and met the editor Zhao Jingshen. The translation was published, and the friendship was a lifetime.

Enlightened Chinese textbooks are compiled by Ye Shengtao and painted by Feng Zikai

Ye Shengtao was originally in the Commercial Press, and when the "August 13" war broke out, the compilation office of the Commercial Press was also destroyed by artillery fire, and Ye Shengtao, Zhou Yutong, Xu Tiaofu, Wang Boxiang and others all broke away from business to join enlightenment. The modern bookstore is not far from the Enlightened Bookstore, and the gentleman said that at that time they were very close. The Enlightened Bookstore has published Mr. Wang's essay "Under the Lamp Collection", a commemorative collection of "Ten Years" published on the tenth anniversary of its establishment, and received Mr. Yuan's novel "Concubines". Mr. Xu said that Xu Qiaofu had assisted Shen Yanbing and Zheng Zhenduo in editing the "Novel Monthly" in business, including Jin Kaiming's editing of "Middle School Students", he was a person who only knew how to bury his head in things and never showed himself, he was responsible for organizing, editing, reviewing, dispatching until proofreading, seeing the sample, a lot of work had his share, but his name was not printed on every book. If it were not for his draft supervision, the novel "Concubine" would not have existed at all.

The Collected Works of Uddhav published by Enlightened Bookstore

When it comes to enlightened bookstores, I always think of Lin Yutang's "Enlightened English Reader", Mao Dun's "Midnight", Ba Lao's "Home", "Spring" and "Autumn", and I will not forget the influential student publication "Middle School Students". And I always think of what Mr. Shi Jingcun said, who said that he was most envious of the large editorial office of the Enlightened Bookstore, where each editor had a writing desk by the window; the scene where Ye Shengtao and his wife Hu Molin sat and cut and pasted the manuscript of the Index of the Thirteen Classics was always in front of his eyes.

I copied Ye Shengtao's diary of February 10, 1946, and on a Wednesday of February 20, Ye Shengtao recorded this:

"Leave home at seven o'clock in the morning. It means that if you want to take the tram to sit, you must start early. Get out of the door and board the car, and you have to sit. Passing through the Bund, looking at the morning view of the Huangpu River. Get off at Nanjing Road and eat the meat noodles of Wufangzhai. Through Wangping Street, newspaper vendors gathered and waited to send newspapers. All these are old dreams, one by one. ”

Two days ago, after I deliberately went to Shanghai Book City to talk with acquaintances, I went west along Fuzhou Road to Xizang Road, and the original bookstores were gone, and the famous magazine stall at the alley next to the Tiantou Stage was also traceable. Seventy-five years ago, Ye Shengtao's so-called "old dream" is now an "old dream" for me.
