A masterpiece of calligraphy in the Biography of Su Dongpo

A few days ago, my old colleague Cai Liangzhong excerpted the passages in "The Biography of Su Dongpo" about Su Shi's connection with the West Lake into 4 exquisite calligraphy works, which greatly benefited me and my thoughts fluttered!
Through The flowing text transcription of Cai Liangzhong's elder brother and the free-flowing brush calligraphy and paintings, I seemed to have visited the West Lake of Hangzhou again, and I realized the admiration of Lin Yutang, a master of traditional Chinese studies, for Su Dongpo, a Northern Song Dynasty writer, calligrapher, gourmet, painter and historical water master.
West Lake in Hangzhou
Born in Meizhou (meizhou, present-day Meishan, Sichuan), Su Shi twice served in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Hangzhou occupies an important place in Su Shi's life experience.
In the fourth year of Xining (1071), Su Shi left Beijing and came to Hangzhou for the first time, where he was awarded the title of Hangzhou General Judge. The so-called general judgment, also known as the same judgment (to avoid secrets), its position is under the prefect and tongzhi, and its duty is to assist the governor of the prefecture in charge of grain transportation, family land, water conservancy, and litigation.
In the fourth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1089), Su Shi went to Hangzhou again, serving as a scholar of Longtuge and knowing Hangzhou, and became the highest governor of Hangzhou. He organized the people to dredge the West Lake, build hospitals, spread famous dishes, and did a lot of good things for the people of Hangzhou. When Hangzhou suffered a great drought and famine and plague, Su Shi asked the imperial court for a reduction of one-third of the rice supplied on the road, and was given a degree to the monk of Shaving, which was exchanged for rice to relieve the hungry people.

Nearly a thousand years ago, Su Shi left more than 160 poems in Hangzhou. Among them, the most famous verse is: "The water is bright and sunny, and the mountains are full of rain and rain." If you want to put the West Lake than the West Lake, light makeup is always appropriate. ”
I have been to Hangzhou's West Lake twice. I remember that she was surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lake was wide, and the outline of the lake was almost oval. Su Dongpo's poems have made Hangzhou's West Lake synonymous with beauty. Indeed, the water of Hangzhou's West Lake is rippling and shining in the sun, which is beautiful. When it rains, the mountains in the distance appear from time to time, and the lake surface is hazy and has another charm. If you compare West Lake to Xi Shi, then light makeup or heavy makeup can always set off her beauty and charm.
Compared with Su Dongpo, Lin Yutang is also a spontaneous and straightforward linguist. After visiting Hangzhou's West Lake, he wrote that Ruan Yuan made a daotai and built a small island on the West Lake, instead of building any buildings such as pavilions, stone pillars, monuments, etc. on the island, but only planted some willow trees. The island, known as Nguyen Gong Yu, stands in the middle of the West Lake, a flat land more than a hundred yards wide, less than a foot above the water. When you look out in the foggy weather, you will see that the fantasy island seems to float up from the water, and the shadow of the flowing water is reflected in the water, breaking the monotony of the lake surface and reconciling with the lake at the same time.
Writing this, Lin Yutang's pen sharpened, and immediately counted the adjacent lighthouse-type monuments. He said that the nearby lighthouse-shaped monument was really obstructive, and it was made by an American student, and he was uncomfortable every time he saw it. He said, I want to declare to the world: If one day I become a bandit general and capture Hangzhou, my first order must be to ask my subordinates to set up a cannon and smash the lighthouse to pieces!

Lin Yutang admired Su Dongpo, not only liked Su Dongpo's poetry, but also admired Su Dongpo's behavior. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, he began to create "The Biography of Su Dongpo". To this end, he read Su Dongpo's works and a large number of materials related to Su Shi's experience, studied the important activity trajectory and the environment of the times in Su Shi's life, as faithful as possible to historical facts, and tried his best to highlight the personality characteristics of Su Dongpo.
In Lin Yutang's view, Hangzhou is like Su Dongpo's second hometown. Hangzhou won the heart of Su Dongpo, and Su Dongpo won the heart of the people of Hangzhou. If you point out that Su Dongpo is from Sichuan, the people of Hangzhou will not be happy to hear it!
Lin Yutang said that SuDongpo and West Lake are inseparable. The poetry of the West Lake, the poetry of non-Su Dongpo is not extremely wonderful; the poetry of Su Dongpo is not enough to make the best of his talents.
