In 1948, a veteran lost contact with the troops during the battle and was accused of desertion. In order to find the old troops, scavenging for 48 years, just to find a truth.
The veteran's name is Chang Menglan.
Chang Menglan was born into a peasant family in Zhangleng Township, Zanhuang County. At the age of 22, Chang Menglan joined the Eighth Route Army and embarked on the road of resistance.
With excellent skills, Chang Menglan was quickly promoted to machine gun squad leader.
In the Battle of Qingfengdian, Chang Menglan used a Czech light machine gun to shoot down enemy aircraft. In this battle, Chang Menglan was promoted to platoon leader and recorded a special merit.
Not long after, the Battle of Shijiazhuang began. Chang Menglan was tasked with capturing Yunpan Mountain.
The terrain of Shijiazhuang is dangerous, and the enemy army has spent a lot of effort on this defense, claiming to "lay down the Yunpan Mountain, and the stone gate is half open." ”
Chang Menglan led the second platoon of fighters to move quickly, using the terrain to strafe the enemy, catching the enemy off guard and chaotically, without the ability to fight back. Ten minutes later, Chang Menglan stood at the top of Yunpan Mountain and raised the red flag of victory. Chang Menglan's Eight Company made another contribution.
In 1948, Fu Zuoyi gathered 35 regiments to fight a decisive battle with our side, and at the same time dispatched the 12th Cavalry Brigade to prepare for an overnight surprise attack on our army. Considering that the enemy was strong and weak, the battalion commander had to take advantage of the darkness to move his position, and the task behind the palace was handed over to Chang Menglan's 8th Company.
At this time, the company commander He Youhai had few available soldiers, so he entrusted this heavy task to Chang Menglan, the bravest and most trustworthy second platoon commander among the three platoon leaders among his subordinates, and asked him to lead eight soldiers and the remaining guns and ammunition to fight.
Company commander He Youhai said to Chang Menglan: "The main task of this blockade is to cover the withdrawal of the whole regiment, no matter what, we must drag the enemy until dark, and the sound of the trumpet is a signal to retreat." ”
According to the regulations, each rifle can only be equipped with 30 rounds of ammunition, and each machine gun can be equipped with 300 rounds of ammunition. Not long after the fierce battle, there were only two rows of bullets left.
By this time, it was dark but the retreat horn had never sounded. In order to preserve their strength, the warriors made retreat requests to Chang Menglan. Chang Menglan was worried that the company commander might encounter an unexpected situation, so he decided to continue to hold out.
Suddenly, with a "bang", Chang Menglan reminded everyone to pay attention. Unexpectedly, as soon as the words fell, an enemy flares hit it, and the place where Chang Menglan was hiding was exposed, and then a row of shells hit him.
The warriors Zhao Xiaoshan and Hou Youlin were sacrificed one after another. Chang Menglan took advantage of the dark night to desperately break through, hiding in the stick field until the enemy army withdrew. He also lost contact with the troops completely and had to beg all the way back to his hometown.
After returning to his hometown, everyone accused him of being a deserter. Helpless, Chang Menglan could only continue to beg and save money all the way to find troops.
Beginning in 1949, the fourth column to which Chang Menglan belonged was reorganized into the 64th Army of the People's Liberation Army, and the 30th regiment of the 10th Brigade was also changed to the 570th Regiment of the 190th Division, which greatly increased the difficulty of Chang Menglan's search.
It was not until 48 years later that Chang Menglan finally found the unit to which he belonged at that time, and he reported to the current regimental commander that he was ordered to cover the retreat of the whole regiment at that time, and the situation of persisting until the end and being separated from the troops.
In 2004, the 79-year-old Chang Menglan died of illness.
However, in the past 48 years of searching, he has never found the answer to whether the trumpet sounded that year.
It is worth mentioning that in the third year after the death of the elderly Chang Menglan, his son finally found He Youhai, the commander of the 8th Company.
He Youhai Company Commander told them the reason why he did not blow the trumpet that year, it turned out that he had not received the order that year, the troops would be exposed as soon as the trumpet sounded, and Chang Menglan's efforts would be in vain, so he did not let the trumpeter blow the trumpet, and could only let them break through and retreat on their own.
He Youhai also said: "Chang Menglan was a good soldier, a brave and good soldier, although he did not blow the trumpet at that time, but the task of covering the retreat of the troops was completed. ”
Resolute obedience to orders is the duty of a soldier. Chang Menglan used his own actions to show the dedication and persistence of a soldier to complete the task, and paid tribute to the heroes of the War of Resistance!
