On February 10, Arab television reported that Russian warplanes had carried out airstrikes in Syria's Raqqa and Hama provinces in the past few hours, killing at least nine extremist militants. The report also noted that the death toll from these airstrikes is likely to increase, as more than 22 extremist group militants, some of them seriously, were injured in addition to those killed on the spot.
The main target of this wave of Russian airstrikes is extremist groups in the Russaf and Athariya desert areas of Raqqa and Hama provinces. As for why Russia chose to use force at a time of tension with the United States, military analysts believe that it is mainly because of the recent re-tension in Syria, and the activities of extremist terrorists in Syria are very rampant. Not long ago, more than 100 extremist groups attacked Ghweran Prison in Syria's northeastern Hasakah province, causing a large number of captured terrorists to escape from prison, and the fierce fighting lasted for about a week, killing more than 320 people on all sides of the fighting.
In addition, on February 9, Oleg Zulavlev, deputy head of the Russian Mediation Center for all parties to the conflict in Syria, also disclosed that the security situation in the area east of the Euphrates River in Syria is critical, with 10 terrorist attacks and sabotage activities occurring in three days, killing 18 people and injuring 25 others.
Precisely because the situation in Syria is critical, Russia has suddenly stepped up its military strikes. According to the London-based Syria Watch, according to incomplete statistics, between February 6 and 8 alone, Russia dispatched a large number of warplanes to carry out more than 80 air strikes on the hideouts of extremist groups in central Syria.
Indeed, Assad's most important supporter of Syria's current president, Russia regularly raids the vast desert area bordering Iraq between Syria's Homs (central) and Deir Ezzor (eastern) provinces. Since the beginning of February, the Russian Air Force has been stepping up operations against extremist groups in central Syria. Russia's frequent airstrikes have dealt a severe blow to extremist groups, largely deterring their attacks in central Syria.
On Feb. 1, for example, Russian warplanes launched a fierce airstrike against the home of extremist groups in Badia, Syria, a source of economic and human resources for Syrian terrorists. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, within 48 hours, Russian forces carried out 28 air strikes against terrorist group positions in Badia in La Kalusafa and athariya in rural Hama.
Of course, Russia's military action in Syria has caused unease in the United States. Not long ago, a senior US military official said that he was "very worried that the current Ukrainian crisis will spread to Syria."
