A mother in India gave birth to a pair of conjoined twins who share almost all their organs and have a slim chance of survival.

The twins— a boy and a girl, with two hands but sharing one leg — and their mother, Shivrajo Devi, 24, gave birth to the baby at a private clinic in the buxar village of eastern India.

However, their condition deteriorated and they were transferred to Sadar Hospital, where medical staff gave them initial treatment, and Dr. Raj Kumar Gupta, a pediatrician at Sadar Hospital, said: "They began to fuse from the waist and only one genitalia was visible, it was a girl, even if the second reproductive organ disappeared, we suspect that the fate of the second child was that of a boy, which makes this situation even more rare because conjoined twins are usually of the same sex."

Once their condition stabilized, doctors took the twins to a larger hospital three hours' drive away, however, their grief-stricken parents were told that any further treatment would have to take place in Delhi, and the couple said they had to take the children home because they could not pay for travel and high medical bills.

The mother said he did not know he was pregnant with conjoined twins, although she had a comprehensive examination including an ultrasound before becoming pregnant, she said: "I can't believe my children are fused together, I was sad and had hoped that the doctors would save their lives, but the doctors rejected them, I don't know what will happen to them now, they told us that these babies need to be put in a glass box and we should take them to a big city like Delhi for treatment".

The twins' father, Chhota Singh, 30, is a factory worker earning £60 a month and says their happiness quickly turned into despair.

The hospital ignored their fragile child, shocking him. He said: "I made sure to check on my wife regularly during her pregnancy and we were kicked out to meet the twins, but all our excitement was gone and after the doctor at Sadar Hospital introduced us to another hospital, I borrowed money to take them there".

"But I was told I didn't need treatment."

Dr Gupta added: "These children are rare conjoined twins who have fully grown up and are connected from the abdomen, they have four hands but share two legs hanging down from one side and most of the vital organs".

"They're in a stable condition but need special care, so we transferred them to a senior hospital, and they're all miraculous babies, very beautiful, but the chances of such twins surviving are always slim, so we can't say how long they'll live."
