But the strange thing is that until the end of the Korean War, the United States did not dare to use atomic bombs. What was the United States afraid of at the time?
In fact, there are many reasons why the United States does not use atomic bombs, and the first two points are related to China.
The first point is that China does not eat this set. At a time when Eisenhower continued to clamor for nuclear blackmail, Chairman Mao directly stated that China was ready to continue the war until US imperialism was willing to give up, until the Chinese and Korean people were completely victorious. It was also at this time that Chairman Mao gave a classic speech: "We will fight as long as US imperialism wants!" Chairman Mao's sonorous and powerful voice made Eisenhower realize that it was impossible to win this war by fighting the volunteers to save face.
The second point is the air raid shelters between China and North Korea. In fact, while the United States was clamoring for the use of nuclear weapons, the Volunteer Army and the Korean People's Army were not idle. They began to actively dig deeper and deeper into the air raid shelters, and they dug deeper and deeper. Collins, chief of staff of the U.S. Army, saw this and brought it up directly at the military conference. Collins believes that the air raid shelters of the Chinese and North Korean forces are digging deeper and deeper, and even if the United States uses nuclear weapons, it will not be able to harm their soldiers. If the power of the atomic bomb does not work, it loses its deterrent effect altogether. In addition, the reason why Eisenhower proposed the use of atomic bombs at that time was to use it to bomb the positions where Chinese and North Korean troops were stationed. If the weapon doesn't work at its full capacity, Eisenhower has to wonder if it's worth it. Of course, the US military has also proposed a solution to this problem, that is, when using atomic artillery bombing, the US Air Force also intervenes at the same time to bomb heavy industry in northeast China and attack the production forces of new China. But if the United States does, it is completely expanding the war, contradicting the end of the war that the United States originally envisioned.
Third, the United States does not dare to bear the consequences of using atomic bombs to expand the war. On the surface, the Korean War was a war in which the Sino-DPRK coalition forces fought back against the United Nations forces led by the United States, but in fact, it was another manifestation of the struggle for hegemony between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two sides clearly know this, but no one dares to point it out, because once it is pointed out, it is likely to set off a third world war. Therefore, when the Chinese army entered the Korean war, it changed the name of the regular army to the volunteer army, and the United States also acquiesced. When the Soviet Air Force entered the Korean War, it was under the banner of the Volunteer Army, and the result of being captured was strictly prohibited. In other words, no matter how many people are on the surface, both sides must ensure that the war will not be expanded. But if the United States took the lead in choosing to drop the atomic bomb, then the Soviet Union, as the big brother of socialism, must shoulder its own responsibilities and stand up and speak. You know, the Soviet Union was also a country with nuclear weapons, and the number of nuclear warheads was comparable to that of the United States. When two of the world's top powers use nuclear weapons against each other, war will not take place only on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, even if Eisenhower shouted loudly, he did not dare to take the lead.
Fourth, the United States fears that its allies will abandon it. In April 1953, the Planning Division of the U.S. National Security Council held a meeting on whether to use nuclear weapons against the Korean Peninsula and discussed a report. In the report, U.S. officials bluntly stated that once the United States uses nuclear weapons, it is likely to attract opposition from allies. The reason why the United States has fearlessly clamored for the use of nuclear weapons is because it dominates the American continent, has no absolute land ties with Eurasia, and often avoids the existence of war. But most of its allies were European countries, and the country in this place feared the Soviet Union the most. If the United States chose to use nuclear weapons and incurred retaliation from the Soviet Union, the European countries might be the first to suffer. U.S. officials believe that if the U.S. side does provoke a war between the United States and the Soviet Union, the allies may no longer support the United States for security reasons. This result is also unacceptable to the United States.
