Statistics found that one city in the first quarter of 2022 has a higher penetration rate of new energy vehicles than Shanghai, ranking first in the country. The city is Shenzhen, which has a penetration rate of more than 47% of its Q1 new energy vehicles, 7 percentage points more than that of Shanghai in second place, but its total car sales and new energy vehicle sales are not as good as Shanghai.

In the first quarter of 2022, the 10 cities with the highest sales of new energy vehicles in the country, the sales volume of individual cities exceeded 20,000 units, and the penetration rate exceeded 20%, the lowest Chongqing was 20.99%, and the highest Shenzhen was 47.05%. And the 10 cities are all new first-tier or first-tier cities, but the top four cities are not the commonly recognized "north, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen", Hangzhou and Chengdu rank third and fourth respectively, and Guangzhou and Beijing only rank fifth and sixth.

One: Shanghai: The biggest winner is not Tesla

Shanghai is currently the most prosperous city in the domestic new energy vehicle market, and it achieved nearly 55,000 new energy vehicle sales in the first quarter, much higher than Shenzhen, which ranked second. However, the most popular new energy vehicle brand in Shanghai is not Tesla China from Shanghai, but BYD from Shenzhen.

In the first quarter of this year, Tesla sold 13,800 new energy vehicles in Shanghai, accounting for 25.61% of the total sales of local new energy vehicles; Tesla's sales in Shanghai in the first quarter did not exceed 10,000 units, and its share in the local market lagged behind BYD by more than 9 percentage points, at 16.09%.

However, in the competition based on the sales of a single model, Tesla won a round, the brand's Model Y ranked first in Shanghai's new energy vehicle sales list in the first quarter, but the Model 3 only ranked fifth, and three of the top four seats were BYD's electric vehicles.

Song PLUS and Qin PLUS were the best PERFORMING BYD models in Shanghai's new energy vehicle market in the first quarter, and most of their sales were contributed by DM-i models. Shenzhen is not only the city with the highest penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the first quarter of China, but also the second city of new energy vehicles ranked by sales. Of course, this is also the location of BYD's base camp.

There is no doubt that BYD plays a very important role in Shenzhen's new energy vehicle market, which can be seen from its local market performance.

In the first quarter, the highest-selling new energy vehicle brand in Shenzhen was BYD, which sold 1.35 new energy vehicles in Shenzhen in Q1, with an exaggerated market share of 35.27%, nearly twice that of Tesla, which ranked second. In the first quarter, Tesla's Shenzhen sales performance was 6926 units.

How popular is BYD in Shenzhen? Among the top ten highest-grossing new energy vehicles in Shenzhen in the first quarter, BYD occupied four seats and ranked in the top six, and the remaining two in the top six were Tesla's Model Y and Model 3.

Three: Hangzhou: multi-point flowering

Similar to the pattern of Shanghai and Shenzhen, the two brands with the best sales of new energy vehicles in Hangzhou in the first quarter were ALSO BYD and Tesla, but the sales gap between the two in Hangzhou is not as large as in Shanghai and Shenzhen. BYD delivered 6241 new energy vehicles in Hangzhou in the first quarter, with a local share of nearly 17%; Tesla is also comparable, with a new car delivery of 5861 vehicles and a market share of nearly 16%.

Unlike the particularly eye-catching performance of local new energy vehicles shown in Shanghai and Shenzhen, Hangzhou's new energy vehicle market is a bit of a flower. In addition to Tesla and BYD models, new energy models of different brands such as Ideal ONE, Xiaopeng P7, Hongguang MINI EV, Volkswagen ID.4X, and NIO ES6 are also in the top ten. None of them are from Hangzhou.

Of course, in terms of brands, Geely and Zero Run from Hangzhou also ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle brands in Hangzhou by sales volume in the first quarter.

Four: Chengdu: Dongfeng's great autonomy has performed well

The city with the fourth highest sales volume of new energy vehicles in the first quarter is not one of the "north, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen", but Chengdu, an important automobile town in the west. In the first quarter, Chengdu's sales of new energy vehicles was 33,000 units, and the penetration rate was close to 26%, higher than the domestic average.

Like the previous three cities, the two best-selling new energy vehicle brands in Chengdu in the first quarter were BYD and Tesla. The former Model Y and Model 3 are among the top ten new energy model sales in Chengdu in the first quarter, and BYD's Song PLUS, Qin PLUS and also rank among them.

Volkswagen and Geely, which have built factories in Chengdu, are also among the top ten new energy vehicle brand sales in Chengdu in the first quarter, with Volkswagen ranking third and Geely ranking tenth.

However, in Chengdu's new energy vehicle market, in addition to the eye-catching performance of some popular models in the market, the Fengshen E70 and Jingyi S50, two new energy vehicles that do not seem to be so popular, are also in the top ten. The brands behind them, Fengshen and Dongfeng brands that mainly sell Fengxing and Jingyi series, also rank in the top ten.

Five: Guangzhou: BYD and Tesla no longer dominate the top two

As one of the members of the "Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen", Beijing only ranked sixth in the sales list of new energy vehicle cities in the first quarter, which is somewhat surprising. In the 2021 new energy vehicle city sales ranking, Beijing is one of the top three, only inferior to Shanghai and Shenzhen.

In the first quarter of this year, Beijing's new energy vehicle sales performance was less than 25,000 units, the only city in the top six below 30,000 units, and its new energy vehicle penetration rate in the first quarter was 22.41%, basically the same as the domestic average.

In terms of brand sales rankings, BYD and Tesla still rank in the top two, with the former having a market share of 25% in Beijing in the first quarter and the latter at 22%.

Seven: Chongqing: Local Chang'an ranks in the top three

Eight: Suzhou: Xiaopeng entered the top three

In the Suzhou new energy vehicle market in the first quarter, BYD and Tesla are still the first and second places that are still thunderous. Nine: Zhengzhou: the only two northern cities in the top ten cities

Zhengzhou is the only northern city in the top ten new energy vehicle sales in the first quarter, except for Beijing. It can be seen that new energy vehicles are more popular in southern cities.

Zhengzhou sold 23,000 new energy vehicles in the first quarter, with a penetration rate of 26%, even higher than Beijing. BYD and Tesla are still the most popular new energy vehicle brands in Zhengzhou.

In terms of model sales rankings, in addition to the popular models on the market, relatively less popular new energy vehicles such as Chery eQ1, Changan Benben, Zero Run T03, and Nezha V have also ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle sales in Zhengzhou in the first quarter.

Ten: Foshan: Xiaopeng P7 topped

Foshan is the only two of the top ten cities to break the pattern of BYD and Tesla in the top two, and the other is Guangzhou.

In the first quarter, the most popular new energy vehicle brand in Foshan by sales volume was BYD and Xiaopeng, and the ranking pattern of "Tesla after BYD" was broken, and Tesla only ranked fourth in Foshan.
