In March 2016, 10 years after Li Chengqing's disappearance, "Xiao Wang" was captured by the police in Guizhou. The case was investigated by the Zengcheng District Branch of the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau. Later, Li Shuquan and his wife learned from the police that "Xiao Wang" was not originally surnamed Wang, but Zhang Weiping, a habitual criminal who abducted and sold children.

According to Zhang Weiping, from 2003 to 2005, he abducted and trafficked nine children in Guangdong, including Li Chengqing, the son of Ouyang Yanjuan. Zhang Weiping said that after he abducted Li Chengqing on the pretext of "buying buns", he and his intermediary "Aunt Mei" took the child to Zijin County in Heyuan City and sold it to a couple for a profit of 13,000 yuan.

Today, Zhang Weiping's confession of "Aunt Mei" has not yet been brought to justice, and he has been sentenced to death by a court for child trafficking — in December 2021, the Guangdong High Court upheld Zhang Weiping's first-instance death sentence.
