Today, when I think about those days of the New Year in the barracks, I still remember them vividly, but what I remember most is when I was a recruit, I made dumplings before the first Spring Festival.

In December 1990, as a conscripted recruit, I took a green-skinned train from the south to the northeast of a certain unit for three days and three nights, came to a directly subordinate battalion of a certain department, and began my military life.

After arriving at the troops, the training began the next day, basically running 5 kilometers every morning, after breakfast, the training queue and standing posture, at 4 p.m., all the recruits changed into fleece jackets, put on ski hats, began to run 5 kilometers, and asked to be completed within 21 minutes; or go to a hill behind the barracks and rush directly upwards; after training, they also had to take the "duck step" and practice the horizontal bar.

One night, just after falling asleep, the whistle of an emergency assembly sounded outside the dormitory. "Veterans are afraid of sentries, recruits are afraid of cannons", in the dark, the rapid and sharp whistle is really chilling.

In the case of lights, from the whistle sounding, to getting dressed and buttoned, to packing backpacks, tying coats, raincoats, washbasins, and carrying water bottles and satchels to the body, rushing to the playground to stand in the assembly queue, the time is not allowed to exceed 2 minutes.

In the dark room to do these things at that time is not easy, Zhang Guan Li wear a lot, just when I secretly glad that it is still neat, but when I touched the front of the pants there is no hole, I suddenly made me cry and laugh, it turned out that I put the pants backwards...

In the blink of an eye, I unconsciously arrived at the first Spring Festival spent outside, and the intense training made people have no time and energy to miss home, but once the individual relaxed, the homesickness at that time was self-evident, in order to alleviate this situation and create a home atmosphere, the class organized everyone to make dumplings together.

At that time, the material conditions of life were still incomparable with now, and the vegetables used for dumplings were mainly Chinese cabbage and a small amount of celery, and meat was a kind of pork.

Everyone divides labor and cooperates, chopping stuffing, mixing stuffing, and noodles, rolling dough skin, pinching shapes, no matter whether it will be or not, no one is picky, especially chopping stuffing, crackling a chop, it is really happy! Mixing stuffing, noodles, rolling dough skin, kneading is a "technical" job, especially for our southern soldiers, basically did not wrap dumplings at home, at first a little bit of play, after the northern comrades-in-arms will be taught. I also learned the work of making dumplings at that time.

There is a Heilongjiang comrade-in-arms who is particularly skillful, the rolling dough skin is quite powerful, the dumpling skin whirling out from his hands like a piece of paper, he rolled the dough skin alone can be used for the whole class to pack, it is really admirable!

While making dumplings, the new comrades-in-arms talked about the customs of the New Year in their respective hometowns, and wrapped happiness, joy and good wishes into dumplings, and there were bursts of laughter and laughter from time to time on the scene. That atmosphere made us, the new soldiers who had just joined the army, really feel the warmth of the big family of the army.

Looking back at the troops, in addition to strict discipline and arduous training, in fact, those plain and simple days, the comrades-in-arms are also simple and natural, and celebrating the New Year together is like following the brothers in their hometown, so that people unconsciously regard the barracks as a home, relieve everyone's homesickness, and spend one warm Chinese New Year's Eve night after another.
