According to data released by swedish consulting agency EV Volumes, in January 2022, global sales of new energy passenger cars were 603,000 units, an increase of 87% year-on-year. However, compared with 907,600 unit sales in December last year, the monthly decline was more than 33%.

The COVID-19 pandemic and chip shortages remain the main factors affecting the overall growth of the automotive market, but EV Volumes is optimistic that the global automotive market is in a period of disruption, with an EV market share of about 10% at the beginning of this year and expected to reach about 15% by the end of the year. Canalys also pointed out that electric vehicles still have greater growth opportunities in 2022 and beyond.

The biggest difference between the data released this time and the past is that in January, whether it is the list of hot models or the list of brands, Chinese electric vehicle brands have generously revealed their names.

In January, the Tesla Model Y topped the list with monthly sales of 32,700 units, while the Model 3 fell out of the top three last December to fifth place with 15,460.

Among the top five best-selling models, Chinese brands occupy three seats, namely Wuling Hongguang miniEV, BYD Qin Plus PHEV and Song Pro/Plus PHEV, which sold 26,682, 18,449 and 16,415 vehicles respectively that month.

The Wuling Hongguang MiniEV, the best-selling electric model in the Chinese market in 2021, fell behind Tesla's two models in December last year, but returned to second place in January.

BYD entered the global TOP20 list in December last year, including Qin Plus PHEV, Han EV and Song Pro/Plus PHEV, and seven models entered the list in January this year. Among them, the sales of four models such as Qin Plus, Song, Dolphin and Tang all hit record highs.

In terms of new car-making forces, Ideal Auto ranked 6th with a best-selling model, Xiaopeng P7 rose two places from 19th in December last year, and Nezha V rushed to the top 20 with high-value intelligent configuration.

In addition, Volkswagen's ID.4 global sales have slipped slightly from last December's ranking, and have now been surpassed by BYD Qin, Song and Ideal One models.

With chery QQ ice cream under the tenth place SAIC motor as the dividing line, the monthly sales of the top nine models on the list exceeded 10,000 units. Chery QQ Ice Cream was officially launched in December last year, and global sales reached 9,984 units in January.

Foreign media CleanTechnic pointed out that the sales of Wuling Hongguang MiniEV fell sharply, to some extent, due to the impact of Chery QQ ice cream. Both models are representative of small, low-cost EVs, and the current consumer base is wider.

In addition, the list of TOP20 hot-selling models has also been shortlisted for Changan Benben, Euler Good Cat, and GAC Aean. The sales performance of the Changan Ben Ben E-Star electric model fell two places from December last year, and The Euler Good Cat replaced the Black Cat to promote to thirteenth place. Gac Aion S and Aion Y also made their debut success.

Sales of the above 20 models accounted for 39.9% of global electric vehicle sales in January. It has to be said that if some models are successful in the list, there will inevitably be models that quietly leave the stage, such as renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf, which were on the list last December.

Interestingly, in January this year, BYD surpassed Tesla with monthly sales of nearly 93,300 vehicles, grabbing the top spot. The monthly sales of SAIC-GM-Wuling decreased by more than 40% to 32,000 units month-on-month, further narrowing the sales gap with Tesla.

The three companies combined to share nearly 30% of the global market share in January.

In addition, BMW, Volkswagen, SAIC and Mercedes-Benz also sell more than 20,000 vehicles per month. SAIC sold 21,238 vehicles in January, rising from 11th in December to 6th.

Compared with the ranking in December last year, domestic brands including BYD, SAIC, GAC and Changan have improved significantly, while Great Wall, Chery and Dongfeng have declined in ranking.

Among the new car-making forces, there are also 3 brands that have entered the TOP20, of which Xiaopeng and Ideal maintained their seats in December last year, ranking 17th and 18th respectively, and Hechuang also successfully ranked 19th with the eye-catching results of Nezha Automobile.

In terms of market share, BYD is significantly ahead of Tesla and SAIC, with its market share soaring to 15.5% in the month; SAIC is close behind, with SAIC-GM-Wuling and SAIC with a combined market share of 8.8%, followed by Tesla at 8.5%.

The market share of the three major brands of BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz is almost equal. Judging from the current market share of other electric vehicle brands in the TOP20, the future market space is huge but it is expected that the competition will be quite fierce.

It's like Hechuang squeezed into the TOP20, and Renault is temporarily out.
