For medical professionals only

Stop being fooled

On January 13, 2022, the State Administration for Market Regulation organized and formulated the Announcement on Issuing Non-nutrient Supplements (2022 Edition) and Supporting Documents for The Catalogue of Health Functions Allowed by Health Foods to Claim (Draft for Comments), which mentioned the proposed cancellation of 7 health care functions that are inconsistent with the positioning of existing health care functions, such as promoting lactation, improving growth and development, improving skin oil, inhibiting tumors, assisting in inhibiting tumors, anti-mutation, and delaying aging.

According to relevant data, as of January 14, 2022, there are 9 products that claim to have the function of promoting lactation, of which 7 products only promote lactation function.

What are pro-lactation supplements

The mainland's "National Standard health food for food safety" defines health care products as: a type of food, with the commonality of general food, can regulate the function of the human body, suitable for specific groups of people to eat, but not for the purpose of treating diseases. In foreign countries, it is called "dietary supplement", "functional food", etc. No matter in which country, health care products can not replace the normal diet and hospital diagnosis and treatment, and can not cause harm to the human body.

The so-called lactation promotion function of health care products is to promote the production of milk by supplementing nutrition for women with insufficient milk secretion. Among the main substances of health foods that have been approved to promote lactation function, traditional Chinese medicine accounts for a large proportion: kudzu root, astragalus, ejiao, angelica, antlers, raw land, Wang Bu Liuxing, ginseng, motherwort, jujube, black sesame seeds, amino acids, pig's trotters, longan meat, goji berries, black chicken, cooked ground yellow, white peony, Sichuan root, etc.

Is it familiar?

Yes, in order to have enough breast milk, many women have drunk chicken soup, pig's trotter soup, etc., and the result is that the milk does not increase much, but leads to milk blockage, mastitis, so that the mother is not eager to live.

In fact, even without these supplements, you can still get enough milk.

What can be done to promote lactation?

▌ Breastfeed as early as possible and breastfeed as needed

Powerful sucking in newborns stimulates prolactin production and promotes lactation. Promoting milk production in the first two days after childbirth is essential to increase mothers' confidence in exclusive breastfeeding, and mothers should be roomed together after childbirth, allowing early contact, early sucking and early opening of milk. At the same time, it is recommended to breastfeed on demand, breastfeeding 8-12 times a day, and sucking on both sides of the breast for not less than 10 minutes each time, encouraging nighttime breastfeeding.

▌ Breast massage

Effective massage techniques can help drain stagnant milk, stimulate lactation reflexes, and prevent lactational mastitis. Self-breast massage is performed in a spiral massage with the fingers of both hands from the outer breast to the nipple for 6 minutes/time, 1-2 times/day until extravasation of milk is observed.

▌ Use a breast pump

An electric breast pump is recommended, and most importantly, the breast shield is placed in the correct position. However, avoid using it for too long.

▌ Psychological counseling

Lactation is formed by the breast under the regulation of the neuroendocrine system, and the emotional state of the mother will also affect the secretion of breast milk - negative emotions such as anxiety will hinder the formation of the lactation reflex and affect the normal circulation of milk, while a positive and optimistic attitude will promote breast milk production.

The companionship and care of the family to the mother, the professional medical staff to explain the importance of breastfeeding to the mother and guide the correct feeding, can promote the production of maternal milk.

In addition, breast warm compresses and hot showers before breastfeeding can also promote milk production.

If there is really insufficient milk, the mother does not have to put all her hopes on the health care products and soups that promote lactation, choose the right formula to feed, and the baby can be healthy and healthy.

If we can't breastfeed, what can we do?

Artificial feeding refers to the use of artificial formula instead of breast milk for infant feeding in cases where normal breastfeeding is not possible. In recent years, with the improvement of formula milk ingredients, many breast milk ingredients have found functional alternatives, such as prebiotics can replace breast milk oligosaccharides to regulate the intestinal microecology.

Studies have found no significant difference in the incidence of allergies in infants and young children with artificial feeding and breastfeeding of less than 3 months. Jia Yingyan and other studies have found that the iron content in formula milk powder is higher than that of breast milk, and the nutritional needs of infants are more balanced, so that the hemoglobin level of breastfed children is lower than that of artificial feeding. Therefore, even if there is not enough milk, mothers can choose to feed with formula, without worrying too much about infants and young children not being able to breastfeed.
