American universities keep pace with the times The new semester opens mold special topic classes

New York

New York University's Clive Davis Institute will offer a new course on Taylor Swift, the pop diva, starting Jan. 26 and continuing through March 9 in the spring 2022 semester.

The course will be taught by the Rolling Stones and New York University alumnus Brittany Spanos, and will cover Swift's evolution as a creative music entrepreneur, the legacy of pop and country songwriters, the discourse of youth and girls' generation, and racial politics in contemporary pop music, according to Variety. There are already many students on the waiting list for this class.

Spanos told Variety, "I've been covering Swift since I started my writing career ten years ago and have always been a huge fan of hers. I feel very privileged to be able to share my Swift expertise with a group of discerning students. ”

According to the course description on the school's website, the class "suggests deconstructing the attraction and aversion to Swift by carefully reading her music and public discourse, as it relates to her growth as an artist and celebrity." ”

Students will also "delve into popular music, fanaticism, media studies, white culture, and the culture and politics of girls' generation in power through reading and lectures." We will also consider topics such as copyright and ownership, American nationalism, and the continuing impact of social media on the pop music industry. ”

The school representative said Swift herself had been invited to speak at the course, but that no response had been made about her.
