On December 31, Nandu reporters learned from the Sichuan Provincial High People's Court that the court had publicly pronounced a verdict on the retrial of the original defendant Zhang Zhijun's intentional homicide, sentencing Zhang Zhijun to death for intentional homicide and depriving him of his political rights for life. The close relatives of the victim who witnessed the verdict at the scene told Nandu reporters that although the retrial verdict was the result they hoped for, they could not be happy because the three relatives had left forever. They said they did not see Zhang Zhijun's family at the scene of the sentencing, but only saw Zhang Zhijun himself through the TV screen, and when the court pronounced his death sentence, "I didn't see any big reaction from him."

Nandu previously reported that on January 10, 2019, in a residential area of Pengzhou, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Zhang Zhijun, a 60-year-old man, stabbed his son-in-law Zou Mou with a knife and his family couple Zou Mouhai and Yang Moufen. In December 2019, the Chengdu Intermediate People's Court convicted Zhang Zhijun of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death. The judgment documents show that after Zhang Zhijun appealed, the Sichuan Provincial High People's Court changed the sentence to a suspended death sentence in the second instance. Since then, the close relatives of the three deceased have questioned the failure to inform the second-instance trial and the verdict in a timely manner, and the understanding opinion was issued by the defendant's daughter, Zhang Mou, which has aroused social concern.

In April this year, the Sichuan Provincial High People's Court decided to initiate trial supervision procedures in accordance with the law in the case of Zhang Zhijun's intentional homicide. On August 20, the case was retried at Mianyang Prison in Sichuan Province, which lasted six hours. On December 31, the Sichuan Provincial Higher People's Court reported that the defendant in the original trial, Zhang Zhijun, could not correctly handle the daughter's family dispute, and the killing of Zou Mou's three people constituted intentional homicide. Zhang Zhijun's criminal methods were cruel, the circumstances were heinous, the consequences were particularly serious, and the crimes he committed were extremely serious and should be punished according to law. Although Zhang Zhijun surrendered voluntarily, it was not enough to give him a lenient punishment, so he changed his sentence to death according to law.

Zhang Zhijun's death sentence will be submitted to the Supreme People's Court for approval in accordance with law.
