This is one of David's last historical paintings, depicting a scene from Greek mythology in which Agamemnon reveals to Achilles that he did not actually bring his daughter Iphigenia as Achilles' bride, but intended to sacrifice her as a sacrifice to appease the goddess Artemis. Achilles, upon hearing this, drew his sword in anger, while Agamemnon's wife, Cloutenestra, put her hand on her daughter's shoulder and watched sadly.
