Former Manchester United boss David ·David Moyes has praised Eric · Ten Hag for doing an "outstanding" job in difficult circumstances at Old Trafford, with close attention to the Netherlands manager only increasing after a disappointing start to the season.

Manchester United started the new Premier League season with eight points from a possible 21, their worst start to the league since 1989/90. Moyes himself, who was the first to follow Sir Alex · Ferguson's successful legacy, now more than a decade ago, has expressed sympathy for Ten Hag, who he says he has not hidden.

"I've been there and I know it's an incredible club with a lot of pressure. Everybody wants to talk about it," Moyes, who was sacked for ten months on a six-year contract, told BBC Sport. "For me, it's the biggest club in the world and no matter what city you walk into, it's going to be talked about. So, it's brought by the territory, and Manchester United wants to win. Supporters want to win. Every manager who comes in wants to win, too.

"It's really difficult, but it's always like that when you're in a job like this. Manchester United is a very good club and is supported by the whole world. Because of this, if you don't do it well, there's always a chance you'll get some criticism. 'I can't speak for Erik · Ten Hag. I think he showed great resilience in the situation he was in. He deserves to be commended for his behaviour. I haven't seen him evade any questions or any media interviews, so I think you have to give him a lot of credit for that.

"But it's a job that can be very stressful and there will be a lot of people talking about it. I think he's done a fantastic job. Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons and the new Manchester United hierarchy awarded a new contract in the summer as a sign of support.
