Transmelight will build a new fab in Austin, Texas

author:cnBeta

Although last October, Micron resold the Lehi fab in Utah to Texas Instruments. However, there have been rumors recently that the company is ready to build a new fab that may be more advanced, and is expected to eventually settle in Austin, Texas. Micron currently has 2+1 plants in Virginia/Idaho, Taiwan/Mainland China 4+1, Singapore 4 / Japan 1.

Micron previously owned another factory outside of Dallas, so the company is no stranger to Texas. Micron was said to have initially expected to build a new plant in North Carolina, but the latest rumors suggest that efforts have been in vain.

Last year, Micron announced it was looking to invest about $150 million to expand and improve existing fabs and possibly build more.

In addition to Texas, california/Arizona are clearly on the shortlist, though it's unclear when the company will make a final decision.

Unsurprisingly, Micron will produce DRAM and NAND flash memory in the new plant. As for which areas the company plans to expand production, it depends on the market trend (DRAM is slightly more likely).

Finally, Micron is said to be looking for suitable employees and a new site that is friendly in terms of utility costs, reliability and regulation.
