On April 19, Ferrari unveiled a new convertible supercar, the Ferrari 296GTS. The new car is a convertible version of the Ferrari 269GTB, which is in line with the 296 GTB.
In terms of design, the Ferrari 296 GTS is basically the same as the previously released 296 GTB, the biggest difference is the roof shape, from the side, the 296 GTS adopts a mechanically folded hard top design, which can complete the open top opening and closing at a speed of less than 45km/h, and the whole process takes only 14 seconds.
In addition, the 296GTS has an extremely simple and elegant design and excellent aerodynamic performance. As a Berlinetta series of sports cars with a mid-rear engine layout, the 296 GTS abandons the active aerodynamic system that has been in use since the launch of the 458 Speciale model. For the first time in Ferrari's history, the active aerodynamic components used in the 296 GTS focus more on generating additional downforce than on reducing air resistance. The active spoiler from LaFerrari blends perfectly with the rear bumper to generate an additional downforce of 100 kg under high wind resistance conditions.
Looking from the front of the car to the rear, the two sides of the body are rapidly adducted, almost folding on the side spoiler. The resulting free space allows for more efficient airflow and maximizes airflow under the bumper.
It is worth noting that as a convertible supercar, engineers focused their main work on the aerodynamic research and development of the tail of the 296 GTS. The wing profile and flying buttress design have been optimised to give the new car the same aerodynamic efficiency as the Ferrari 296 GTB and to cope with the limitations imposed by the installation of a foldable hardtop convertible.
To maximize the use of the airflow impact side spoiler, the bumper in front of the wheel is ended by a vertical end plate, which the official said: The end plate creates a local recompression zone, which increases downforce and increases the ability to suck hot air from the radiator. On one side of the bumper, side air curtains direct air from the front of the bumper to the wheel position, which is vented through a specially crafted wheel arch opening. The outlet portion of this pipe is calibrated to accommodate the laterally expanding wake.
Due to the very efficient airflow from the front, the diffuser has a simple linear design, which is perfectly unified with the design of the upper part of the rear bumper. The center channel of the diffuser has a double bending line. The device can change the direction of the air flow sucked along the bottom of the car into the tail, thereby inhibiting the vertical expansion of the car wake and effectively reducing the drag.
In addition, the cockpit of the 296 GTS is equipped with Ferrari's latest fully digital interactive interface, which is more technological. The interior layout is inspired by the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, where physical buttons are replaced by a large number of touch components, the central instrument is highly integrated with all the information needed to drive, and the screen in front of the co-pilot also provides passengers with some sense of engagement.
The 296 GTS's powertrain consists of a V6 turbocharged engine and an electric motor, and as a plug-in Ferrari, it is the third electrified Ferrari road car in Ferrari's history, and the new car is named in a manner that follows Ferrari's traditional naming tradition, that is, its total displacement (2.992L), the number of cylinders and the GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) abbreviation.
The V-engine has a cylinder angle of 120° and is powered by a plug-in hybrid electric motor. It was the first Ferrari engine to have a turbocharger installed inside a V-shaped structure. This significantly reduces the vehicle's center of gravity and reduces engine weight, which is a total weight loss of 30 kg compared to the previous Ferrari V8 engine.
With the blessing of many black technologies, the internal combustion engine of the 296 GTS can output 654 horsepower when working independently, and when the rear axle motor intervenes, it can provide another 164 horsepower, which allows the 296 GTS to burst out a staggering 830 horsepower and a total torque output of 740 Nm. The MR sports car accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and reaches a speed of 330 km/h, basically reaching the performance level of ferrari F8.
In addition to the V6 turbocharged engine, the new car is equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission already used in the SF90 Stradale, Ferrari Roma, Portofino M and SF90 Spider models, which also includes a "ferry management brake" that allows the electric motor and the internal combustion engine to work together to achieve full power output, or to separate the two and allow the electric motor to operate independently. However, the 7.45 kWh battery pack on this car can only allow the 296 GTS to run 25 kilometers under pure electric endurance, so it is impossible to get a green card.
The Ferrari 296 GTS is also available with the Optional Fiorano kit, which further reduces weight and makes special adjustments to further optimize the driving experience. It also allows the 296 GTB to generate a maximum downforce of 360 kg at a speed of 250 km/h.
