Honda will build an all-solid-state battery production line and launch 30 pure electric vehicles by 2030

On April 12, Honda announced an important move to vigorously promote electrification, and will launch 30 pure electric vehicles in the global market by 2030, with an annual production capacity of more than 2 million. At the same time, Honda said it will build an all-solid-state battery demonstration production line with an investment of about 43 billion yen, which is scheduled to start in the spring of 2024. Over the next 10 years, the company will invest about 8 trillion yen in research and development, and a total of about 5 trillion yen in electrification and software to accelerate the electrification process.

It is understood that from the existing organizational structure divided by motorcycles, automobiles, and power products, Honda has separated the "electric products and services, batteries, energy, mobile power packages, hydrogen fuels" with future core competitiveness, and the "software and networking field" associated with this, and integrated them into one to establish a new organization "Business Development Headquarters". This increases flexibility and enhances cross-domain collaboration of products.

By 2030, Honda plans to roll out 30 electric vehicles around the world, from light commercial to flagship, with an annual production of more than 2 million. From 2026 onwards, Honda will launch a product using "Honda e: Architecture", which is a pure electric vehicle dedicated platform that combines various software and hardware platforms.

Focusing on the Chinese market, Honda plans to launch 10 electric vehicles by 2027. In addition to Wuhan, it is planned to build a special plant for electric vehicles in Guangzhou.

For the power battery, the core component of pure trams, Honda said that at this stage, it will ensure stable procurement in each region by strengthening external partnerships for liquid lithium-ion batteries. At present, Honda is purchasing batteries from General Motors, CATL and Envision Power in the North American, Chinese and Japanese markets, and has established a battery production joint venture in the North American market.

In the second half of the 2020s, Honda will accelerate the independent research and development of next-generation batteries and build a demonstration production line for all-solid-state batteries currently under development, with a planned investment of about 43 billion yen, which will be launched in the spring of 2024 and applied to models launched after 2025.

Over the next 10 years, Honda will invest about 8 trillion yen in research and development. Approximately JPY 5 trillion is expected to be invested in electrification and software, including JPY 3.5 trillion in R&D expenditure and JPY 1.5 trillion in investment. At the same time, about 1 trillion yen will be invested in the next 10 years to "prepare for future growth," including "new fields" and "resource recycling."
