Senior engineer dismantles | discontinued fuel vehicles / hand-picked NVIDIA, bydir intelligent driving behind the smorgasbord

On April 3, 2022, BYD, China's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, issued a notice to stop the production of fuel vehicles from last month. Currently, the company only produces pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but will continue to produce engines and other components for vehicles with internal combustion engines.

According to the monitoring data of The Gaogong Intelligent Automobile Research Institute, in 2021, bydir (excluding Denza) will have 194,400 new fuel vehicles in the Chinese market (excluding imports and exports), accounting for 27.01% of all its new vehicles.

From January to February 2022, this figure has slipped to 7.91% (mainly the fuel version of Qin and Song).

Half a month ago, on March 22, NVIDIA announced at the GTC 2022 conference that from the first half of 2023, BYD will be equipped with Nvidia's DRIVE Hyperion platform on some of its new energy vehicles to achieve intelligent driving and intelligent parking.

This means that, in addition to the full focus on electrification, BYD stands on the same starting line with domestic and global first-line brands (including new forces) for the first time in the intelligent driving track. Prior to this, BYD's understanding of intelligence was more focused on the cockpit, and there was no outstanding differentiation.

"The only criterion for judging whether a car is truly intelligent," in the view of Yang Dongsheng, vice president of BYD Group and president of the Institute of Product Planning and New Automotive Technology, is that "after entering the vehicle, whether the vehicle-machine network connection system can fully take over or replace all the functions of the smart phone." ”

This is bydir's DiLink intelligent networked car machine system launched by BYD, and the rotating large screen + Android car machine ecology is one of the few highlights. After all, on the host chip, this system is still equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon sm6350 chip (the previous generation of car machine was Snapdragon 625), and the performance still lags behind the mainstream 8155SP in the market.

In terms of intelligent driving, BYD is currently mainly divided into two generations of products, and the best-selling Han is a watershed. But at the same time, in terms of supplier selection, BYD still seems to be in a wait-and-see period, cooperating with Bosch, Continental, Veoneer (Vineninger), and ZF.

BYD's DiPilot 1.0 system mainly includes advanced driver assistance functions developed in cooperation with the traditional Tier 1 and diTrainer 1.0 functions independently innovated. In 2023, DiPilot will achieve the ability to achieve L3 level of autonomous driving, while BYD will lead and develop software and hardware to support L3 and above level of automatic driving.

At present, in the automotive-grade semiconductor part of ADAS, BYD can realize internal supply of some MCUs, DMS, night vision systems, and 360-degree panoramic parts. But key ADAS cameras, lidar, millimeter-wave radar, etc. are still in their early stages.

Prior to the listing of Han (July 2020), BYD's main partner was Bosch.

The solution is Bosch's mainstream second-generation camera + MRR evo medium-range millimeter wave radar, which realizes ACC stop-and-go full-speed adaptive cruise system, PCW predictive collision alarm system, AEB automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian identification and pedestrian protection functions, LDWS lane departure warning system, and TSR traffic sign intelligent identification.

In addition, in the blind zone millimeter wave radar, BYD mainly uses Hella's solution.

On the Han car, BYD first introduced a full-stack solution from Veoneer, including a forward-looking camera + forward radar + blind spot radar. However, we also see that some Han models (not sure if it is the upcoming Han DM-i/p) have a third-generation camera solution equipped with Bosch.

In January 2022, the BYD DM-i Super Hybrid was officially released. At the same time, BYD also released three new cars equipped with DM-i super hybrid technology - BYD Qin PLUS DM-i, Song PLUS DM-i and Tang DM-i.

Among them, BYD Qin PLUS DM-i introduced another supplier of intelligent driving solutions for the first time, Continental, equipped with the latter's MFC431 (multi-function camera, up to TJA) + ARS410 (mainstream forward radar) combination.

At the same time, Song PLUS DM-i still uses Bosch's solution; Tang DM-i is Veoneer's solution in Hanshang, supporting ICC intelligent pilot system, ICA integrated adaptive cruise system and TJA traffic congestion assistance system.

As the first model of BYD's e-platform 3.0, dolphins, which will be launched in September 2021, are equipped with a monocular (wide field of view) solution based on Mobileye + ZF, similar to the system equipped with haval models.

In addition to external cooperative suppliers, in the self-research part, BYD officially announced at the end of December last year that it had established a joint venture with Momenta "Shenzhen Dipai Zhixing Technology Co., Ltd." to integrate and develop high-level intelligent driving technology in the field of intelligent driving for a long time.

Among the equity of the joint venture, BYD invests 60% and Momenta invests 40%. Yang Dongsheng, vice president of BYD and president of the Institute of Product Planning and New Automotive Technology, served as the legal representative of the new company.

In addition, BYD has also chosen Baidu as its latest intelligent driving supplier, which will provide BYD with an INTEGRATED ANP intelligent driving product and a human-machine co-driving map, and the first mass production car is expected to be released soon.
