NEXO "nest horizontal", Mirai downhill road 2022 fuel cell passenger car market how to go

In 2022, both international and domestic, the importance of the hydrogen energy industry has risen to a new height: the United States has launched a $9 billion hydrogen energy industry promotion plan; China has officially introduced a top-level design plan for hydrogen energy; and the European energy crisis caused by the Russo-Ukrainian War has pushed hydrogen energy to the cusp of European and even global public opinion.

At this stage, the application of hydrogen energy is the first in the car. Can the rise of the hydrogen energy industry drive the rapid development of the hydrogen energy vehicle market? International fuel cell vehicles to passenger cars, january to February 2022, the global total sales of hydrogen fuel cell passenger cars exceeded 2200, an increase of more than 20% year-on-year, sales concentrated in Hyundai and Toyota two companies, of which Hyundai Motor has been on the global hydrogen fuel cell vehicle "sales crown" throne for 3 consecutive years, and in 2022 to maintain a leading advantage, the market accounted for nearly 50%.

Can the heat of the hydrogen energy industry be passed on to the fuel cell vehicle market? Hydrogen Cloud Chain discusses the development of global fuel cell passenger cars in 2022 from the perspective of the distribution and geographical distribution of international fuel cell passenger car sales.

Hyundai is still ahead, and Toyota is sluggish

According to the hydrogen cloud chain database, there are many fuel cell vehicle models on sale worldwide, but sales are concentrated in the two models of Hyundai NEXO and Toyota Mirai, and Honda Clarity, which was once one of the main forces, is also in a state of scattered sales due to discontinuation.

Hyundai continues to dominate the fuel cell passenger car market. Hyundai NEXO sold 368 and 652 units in January and February, respectively, and this year's cumulative sales of 1,070 units, an increase of 35% year-on-year. In terms of total volume, Hyundai's sales account for nearly 50% of the global total.

The second-generation Mirai failed to reverse the decline in NEXO. The industry has given high hopes for Toyota's second-generation Mirai, but Toyota Mirai's sales in January and February were 347 and 412, respectively, and this year's cumulative total of 759 units, down 14% year-on-year, continues to lag behind Hyundai NEXO.

Some people believe that the supply supply is reduced due to factors such as supply chain problems caused by the epidemic and natural disasters in Japan, which has caused the decline in Mirai sales, but in fact, after the "sales crown" of fuel cell passenger cars was taken away by Hyundai in 2019, Toyota has been suppressed by Hyundai in fuel cell passenger car sales.

Honda slowly clears inventory. Since Honda has announced the suspension of fuel cell vehicles, sales at this stage should be clearing inventory. Honda sold 34 and 43 units in January and February, and this year it has sold a total of 77 fuel cell vehicles.

The Chinese market hangs zero. Although a number of car companies in China have launched fuel cells, there is still no sign of starting the fuel cell passenger car market, and there are only a small number of experimental vehicles. As a result, the development of China's fuel cell vehicle market has also been criticized by some hydrogen energy practitioners and enthusiasts.

Hyundai NEXO looks at domestic, Toyota Honda looks overseas

NEXO is highly dependent on the local market. Hyundai's NEXO market is mainly in South Korea, with a cumulative total of 969 vehicles (319 and 650 in January and February, respectively), accounting for 95% of the total, a veritable "home dragon". The rest were mainly sold to the United States and Europe, of which 53 were sold in the United States. The high dependence on the local market makes NEXO seem a bit "nested".

Toyota Mirai balances the domestic and foreign markets. Toyota's local sales in January-February were 328 units (163 units in January and 165 units in February, respectively), accounting for 43.2%.

Honda's sales are basically overseas. There seems to be no inventory in The country, only 1 unit has been sold, while in the United States this year a cumulative sales of 71 vehicles.

Looking at South Korea in the international hydrogen passenger car market in 2022?

The international market for fuel cell vehicles is still "a single seedling". Judging from the proportion of Hyundai and Toyota's local market, the international market is actually still Toyota's one-man show, and Hyundai NEXO can only rely on the national policy "nest horizontal".

The heat of hydrogen energy is difficult to pass on to the automobile consumer market, and subsidies are still the key to the development of hydrogen passenger cars. From the perspective of the four regions of Europe, the United States, Japan and South Korea, the rapid growth of the South Korean region vigorously promoted by the government, the united states region continues to pick up but still does not reach the level of 2017/2018, the European region is still sluggish, and Japan, which is known as building a "hydrogen energy society", has declined. Therefore, combined with the development experience of China's pure electric vehicles and South Korea's hydrogen energy vehicles, the strong subsidies under the leadership of the government are still the key to the rapid development of hydrogen energy passenger cars, and the heat of the industrial hydrogen energy industry cannot be quickly transmitted to the automobile consumer market.

South Korea has become the locomotive of the global hydrogen passenger car market. Overall, the global fuel cell passenger car market has grown from January to February, but if the Korean market is excluded, the actual global fuel cell passenger car is actually in a flat or even declining state. With a market share of more than 40%, South Korea has become the locomotive of the hydrogen passenger car market.

Therefore, the development of fuel cell passenger cars in 2022 may still depend on the Korean market. Looking back at the development of pure electric vehicles in China, it is precisely under the strong promotion of the state that the scale of China's pure electric vehicle market has occupied 50% of the global scale for a long time, and finally incubated the excellent pure electric vehicle industry chain, achieved the phased goal of "overtaking in the bend", and began to go global. Will South Korea replicate this path on fuel cell vehicles? Hydrogen Cloud Chain will wait and see with everyone.
