During the Winter Solstice Festival of the Lunar Calendar in the year of Jiashen, Zhang Xianzhong received two foreign missionaries at the Chengtian Hall in the "Old Imperial City" of Chengdu. One of them is called Leviticus and the other is called Anwensi.

Zhang Xianzhong saw that they were dressed strangely and said:

If you two wear a weird little hat and wear a plain dress, and you look down on us Lao Zhang, Er and so on will become guilty people! Your two strange shapes must have surprised the courtiers. This does not show that our old Zhang respects the wise, nor is it the proper performance of your advisers... So it must be changed to Hanfu."

Zhang Xianzhong's words are also reasonable. Li Lisi whispered to An Wensi in a foreign language: "Zhang Xianzhong seems to respect my two "Xishi" as well. When the people see that they value us, they will respect and believe in our holy religion. ”

So the two of them knelt down and said loudly, "Long live the old man, we are thankful, and we have received the robe of the official dress." ”

Zhang Xianzhong was overjoyed, laughing and saying, "Lao Tzu has appointed your two priests as "Heavenly Scholars and Guoshi"! ”

Li Lisi and An Wensi even resigned.

Zhang Xianzhong puffed up his eyes and said, "Our old Zhang is the Emperor of the Great Western Kingdom, with golden mouths and jade teeth, and the saliva that spits out has no reason to swallow back!" ”

An Wensi hurriedly said to Li Lisi in a foreign language: "I can't resign any longer, beware of Zhang Xianzhong turning his face in anger and shame." The two had to give thanks.

Zhang Xianzhong was happy again, and ordered that the two "Taixi Scholars" be treated preferentially, just like the six shangguans, and the treasury would give feng lu on a monthly basis, and each person would be given silver ten taels per month by the treasury.

The two priests, Shane, said: "I am deeply ashamed of the great blessings that the elder has repeatedly received. But since I was a child, I have vowed to refuse the temptation of possessions and devote myself to serving "God". Now in your country to preach and save the living people, there is one or two pieces of silver every month, which is enough to feed this remnant... Long live the old man does not need to give more than a lot of gold every month! ”

Zhang Xianzhong said, "You two don't have to be stubborn, otherwise you will appear to be greedy and miserly!" Our old Zhang is already the Emperor of the Great West, how can he hang his teeth in the silver? I know that Er waits for no silver two, but talking about the heart of our old Zhang Jingxian is not deliberately showing the wealth of Lao Tzu's Great Western Kingdom! ”

The two missionaries discussed afterwards: "Although Zhang Xianzhong said "respect for the sage", I don't know if it came from sincerity? Let us not covet the world's wealth, but give the silver he has given to the faithful and the poor people of the foreign religions..."

During the Chongzhen period at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1628-1644), the Italian Catholic priest Li Lisi and his assistant An Wensi entered the Sichuan river and preached in the Chengdu area.

His book "The Entry of the Holy Religion into Sichuan" recounts the activities of the Catholic Church in Sichuan, and also records the detailed history of Zhang Xianzhong's massacre in Sichuan in the late Ming Dynasty.

Li Lisi and An Wensi were named "Heavenly Scholars" by Zhang Xianzhong. Because they are all witnesses to Zhang Xianzhong's Sichuan massacre. Therefore, the "Sacred Religion into the River" they wrote should also be said to be the most authoritative.

The most valuable of these is the dictation of two missionaries, Lee and Ann. They were recommended by Zhang Xianzhong when he was proclaimed emperor, and were made a Tianxue Guoshi by Zhang Xianzhong until Zhang Xianzhong was shot dead by the Qing army.
