The Win11/10 free toolset PowerToys 0.55.0 was released

Microsoft released PowerToys 0.55.0 today, marking the third release of the year. In the release notes, Microsoft added that the release cycle for PowerToys v0.55 is to continue to prepare for PowerToys ARM64, fix some top-level issues and introduce new utilities.

Previous work helped get the team to upgrade the code base to. .NET 5, after which you will be upgraded to . NET 6, which should lead to increased stability and speed. In terms of introducing new utilities, Microsoft announced three new toys, which are described below.

File Explorer plugin: Preview the developer files in the pane. In total, about 150 file extensions have been added. We are using the Monaco Editor to support this experience.

File Explorer Plugin: STL File Format Thumbnails and Preview Pane Build! Since STL is a common 3D file format, this allows for quick visual inspection.

Mouse tool: Cross the mouse pointer with Ctrl+Alt+P. This feature was developed in conjunction with Microsoft's accessibility team. When the team told us about the idea and described trying to find your cursor through the eyedropper, we knew that we could quickly enable the feature using code from other mouse tools. Here's a quote from a tester roughly validating a build. "It will change my life so that I don't often lose my pointer when using any computer." This is a huge change! I will be able to work again at my normal pace. For people with visual impairments, this is a complete game changer! Joanna A said.

Why this is important is because this is one of the main work items required to support ARM64. Also, once we are in . Run on NET 6, which will help provide speed gains.
