Age of Dragons: April 29 MrGM and Asmongold Live Interview Designer Highlights Summary

Twitch anchors MrGM and Asmongold interviewed Brian Holinka, the chief battle designer of World of Warcraft, and Ion Hazzikostas, respectively, on their respective livestreams.

This post is a transfer of the content of the collation, because the landlord hates that Asmongold will not involve the interview content that is not mentioned in the wowhead article, nor will it interpret the words of the article according to the video, if you want to watch the full interview, please watch the live broadcast replay of the two by yourself.

New race/class collocations

No commitment can be made yet, but the designers hope that races won't impose restrictions on players. The timing of this (adding new race/class combinations) is debatable. Some classes have rich backstories (which make it difficult to add optional races), such as Paladins and Warlocks.

In 10.0, all races can become thieves, mages, and priests.

Share talent presets

Designers considered this feature, but wouldn't add it to the game in the first place. They want players to work on the talent tree, but they don't want to do features that players don't need or care about. They don't want players to keep downloading the optimal talent configuration (from the web).

Talent threshold

There are two thresholds in the Talent Tree (note: this should refer to the design of "needing to be X points in the previous level to enter the next level"), which is intended to encourage players to try more talent combinations, rather than directly to the final layer. There will be a lot of content in the Talent Tree, so players can choose to point or not to click on them.

Covenant skills

The development team is still discussing how to integrate covenant skills into the new talent tree system, some covenant skills are very suitable for class characteristics, so they will be added, and designers are considering whether to add them to the talent tree one by one. In his reply, the designer mentioned the Abomination of Appendages (Psychic DK's Covenant Skill).

Gladiator mount

Gladiators will get both new mounts and new Dragon Companion customization options in the new version. Designers don't want to make it a binary or alternative reward.

Long Hill

There is no limit to the first Dragon Hill character per user, except for the need to purchase expansion packs (for district services other than national services). Starting with the second Dragon Hill character, you need to have a level 50 non-Dragon Hill character on the corresponding server. Players can only have one Dragon Hill character per server.

Gladiator posture

Gladiatorial battles will not return.

Asmongold interview highlights

Shadow Nation's greatest success

Create brand new content in World of Warcraft. The designers dug up a lot of content from the plot and setting since War3. "What else is there [to create new content]?" It's the big problem they face in every new version.

One of the things designers learn is to keep asking themselves, "Is this content fun after being repeated many times?" ”

Ride the Dragon

There are currently no plans to design a dragon ride. The designers liked the idea, but wanted to get feedback from players on whether dragon taming was interesting.

Battlefield and war modes

In the long run, designers want to make new battlefields and new field PVP content. But the current focus is on PVP equipment and single-row ratings.

The essence of wild PvP lies in its "organic" part.

Older versions of equipment

When an older version of equipment becomes a new version of BIS (such as Sylvanas's Dagger), players generate a lot of negative feedback, especially those who missed the old version. The experience was terrible, but overall, designers felt that the suitability of individual gear beyond one version was not a big problem.

Captain pick-up

Ion supports captain pick-up returns. But maintaining both pickup modes at the same time is cumbersome. Over the past few years, the development team has repeatedly improved the pickup mode, but there are still many problems that need to be solved, such as the rules of equipment trading, and how to deal with picks that are higher than the load but do not bring players an improvement.

Designers are seriously thinking about it, but they've been thinking about it for a full six years. In open-world content, individual pickup may be more useful, but they want to return to the direction in which the player can freely decide how to distribute on boss drops. There's no guarantee that changes to the pickup method will be announced in the coming months, but (captain pickup return) is the designer's current thinking. However, captain pick-up also has its drawbacks, such as dropping a bow in a team without hunters.

Plugins

The tuanben design follows two principles: 1. Fun, 2. The difficulty of the boss matches its position in the regimental book. The reality is that players are using plugins, so you must also take into account the convenience of plugins when designing boss battles.

The problem is that over the past few years the plugin has shifted from providing information to doing calculations instead of the player, and the designers don't know how to fix this problem. If the designers solve it, they can redesign boss battles (to make it easier). In the past they've disabled plugins like AVR, but the problem with doing so is that if plugins are forbidden to call certain excuses, like buff and debuff, then all team framework plugins won't work.

PTR and testing

Designers consider the latter three bosses of the Holy Sepulchre to be successful. Not testing boss battles in advance brings magical effects, and it also helps to unfold the story. For example, in Eldon's Ring of Law, people are trying to figure out the situation for the first week, and a lot of the wiki entries are even blank because no one has figured out what it is.

Designers are developing new encryption techniques to return to the pattern of players constantly exploring hidden content.

After the WLK nostalgic suit

After defeating Hayion, where will the nostalgic suit go? Designers are listening to players.
