Folder preview

In Windows 11 Build 22593 and later, users notice several new features when browsing File Explorer. One of the new additions is Folder Preview, which, as the name suggests, is to quickly preview the contents of a folder.

Folder preview support was removed in the original Windows 11 release, and it will return in Sun Valley 2 (22H2 release). As you can see in the screenshot, users can now preview the contents of the folder without having to open it. For those who want to quickly preview media files, Microsoft is also preparing for a quick view view of Windows 11.

In addition to this, File Explorer will have other improvements, which are outlined below.

Tab support

Microsoft has been developing tabs for Windows 11 File Explorer after abandoning its original idea of tagging all applications with Windows Sets.

At the April 5 press event, Microsoft confirmed support for the tab feature of Windows 11 Chinese Explorer, but the company did not elaborate on the feature and is not sure when it is expected to occur.

The feature, which is expected to go live later this year, will resemble tabs in web browsers. Tabs will make users more efficient and productive, making it easier for users to switch between folders or directories and open files for a particular folder in two or more tabs.

Users can also select and move tabs, or open tabs like a traditional window, and the feature may appear in new preview versions.

New Home Page and Redefined Quick Access

The Quick Access button in the left sidebar of Explorer has been renamed Home, and the concept of Quick Access has been reused.

Users can now find Quick Access above the fixed or frequently used folder section.

In addition, pinned files are now called "favorites". This is done because Quick Access is now updated to include content from the user's OneDrive, downloads, and any index locations.

Microsoft also has a special treatment for OneDrive, so even files that don't exist locally will appear in Quick Access.

Context menu suggestions

File Explorer is getting a new feature called Context Menu Suggestions, which uses context suggestions to recommend contacts when a user tries to share certain files using the local share menu.

This is especially useful when users have Microsoft 365 and their contacts belong to the same organization. The entire suggestion module is based on an intelligent system that automatically predicts contacts and helps users perform certain tasks easily, so in Windows 11, the productivity of using File Explorer has been dramatically improved.
