Many times Zhang Xueliang would prepare fine wine at the Shuai Mansion just waiting for Sun Mingjiu to visit.
The two talked about the world, drinking wine and talking about ideals. Therefore, when Chiang Kai-shek went to Xi'an to offer condolences, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng launched the famous Xi'an Incident at home and abroad.

In the early morning of December 12, 1936, it was exceptionally dark. Sun Mingjiu sneaked into chiang kai-shek's five rooms with his men, intending to capture chiang kai-shek alive. However, an accompanying soldier inadvertently knocked down a chair and woke up Chiang Kai-shek's guards, and after a few gunshots, Sun Mingjiu entered the inner room but did not see Chiang Kai-shek. After capturing Chiang Kai-shek alive, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng forced Chiang Kai-shek to sign an edict on cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists, and used the radio to announce that the two parties would cooperate in jointly resisting Japan. Sun Mingjiu originally thought that if he shot Wang Yizhe, the Northeast Army would obey his command to save the young marshal. With this identity, Sun Mingjiu flourished in New China, and once served as a national political commissar and a member of the Shanghai Municipal Council. Sun Mingjiu began to report around. It was not until December 31, 1981, that Zhang Kui, director of the National Political History Office, held a theme meeting on the "Xi'an Incident"
