From April 1948 to the liberation of Peiping the following year, this small mountain village, these simple courtyards, have always been the seat of the supreme headquarters of the Cpc Central Committee and the People's Liberation Army, and are the nerve centers connecting the strategic regions of the country.
The strategic decision of the Liaoshen Campaign of the Chinese People's Liberation War, which shook the world, was conceived and formed here, and from here the strategic command and deployment was issued.
The eve of the showdown

At this time, the CPC Central Committee was in Xibaipo, discussing and studying the battle plan for the Liaoshen Campaign day and night, and in the war room of the Central Military Commission, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, Ye Jianying, Ren Bishi, and others were gathered around a large table and were drawing up a map of the decisive battle in northeast China.
"After two years of the War of Liberation, the Kuomintang army dropped from 4.3 million to 3.65 million, with many recruits and few veterans; the People's Liberation Army increased from 1.2 million to 2.8 million, and the ratio of enemy and enemy strength changed from 3.5:1 in the early stage of the war to 1.3:1. In the northeast battlefield, our army has 1 million people and 550,000 enemy soldiers; in the north China battlefield, there are 600,000 enemy soldiers and 419,000 people in our army. ”

Although the Wei Lihuang group still has nearly 500,000 people, it has been divided and surrounded by us in three unconnected areas of Changchun, Shenyang, and Jinzhou, with a small area, difficulty in supply, and loss of mobile combat capability. ”

"However," Zhou Enlai said with a smile, "fortunately, Chiang Kai-shek was worried about retreating from the northeast without a fight, and the political and economic losses were too great, so he either withdrew or defended, and the chess pieces were undecided." The enemy in the northeast is at a loss and his morale is low, and this provides a favorable opportunity for our army to first carry out a decisive battle on the battlefield in the northeast. "Closing the Jiang army in the northeast and annihilating it on the spot is most beneficial to me."

In Shenyang City, the autumn breeze is cold, and the leaves are scattered on the ground.
What was once a large industrial city with chimneys is now rubble and desolate. The barbed wire was pulled across the street, and cement bunkers could be seen everywhere. There were few pedestrians on the road, except for the groups of Armed And Loaded Kuomintang soldiers and officials, most of them were hungry beggars and wandering victims.
Wei Lihuang
In the residence of the commander-in-chief of the Northeast "Suppression General", Commander-in-Chief Wei Lihuang sat down on a leather sofa and stared for a long time at the military map on the opposite wall. Thinking of the current situation and his own situation, he couldn't help but sigh a long time.
Wei Lihuang was appointed as the kuomintang's highest military and administrative officer in northeast China in January 1948. His predecessor was Chen Cheng, chief of staff of the Kuomintang army.
Chen Cheng once boasted about Haikou to "destroy the communist army and build a new northeast", but under the fierce offensive of the Northeast People's Liberation Army, he lost the city and lost land one after another, and lost soldiers and generals.
Temporary
In early 1948, when the elite unit of the Kuomintang army in the northeast, the newly organized Fifth Army, was completely annihilated, Chen Cheng was even more frightened, pretended to be ill, requested his resignation, and fled back to Nanjing in a hurry.
In order to save the defeat, Chiang Kai-shek had no choice but to ask Wei Lihuang, one of the "Five Tigers" of the Kuomintang army, to serve in the northeast.

Wei Lihuang also clearly remembered the situation when Chiang Kai-shek summoned him to talk. Chiang Kai-shek first said how important the northeast is, and how powerless people cannot hold on to it, and then said to him:
"You've saved the situation a few times in the last few times. Now only you can take on this responsibility. The full authority of the Party, the government, and the military is entrusted to you. There are any difficulties that can be solved on a priority basis. In case of failure, the responsibility is not on you. ”
"You can't fight without an army. Now the army in the northeast is besieged by the communists. No big reinforcements. Wei Lihuang saw that he could no longer resign, and hesitated for half a moment before he said his concerns.
"Give you 5 reinforcements first." Logistically, priority is given to the supply of the northeast. Chiang Kai-shek immediately promised.
Chiang Kai-shek
Of course, Chiang Kai-shek's promise was not fulfilled. In fact, the battlefields of North China, East China, and central Plains were frequently in emergency, making it impossible for him to reinforce the northeast.
Therefore, after Wei Lihuang arrived in Shenyang, he always insisted on sticking to it, no matter where the PLA hit, no matter how anxious the defenders were in various places, and no matter how repeatedly Chiang Kai-shek sent him to send troops to relieve the siege, he always concentrated the main force near Shenyang and did not move.
Seeing that Xinlitun, Liaoyang, Anshan, Yingkou, and Jilin were captured by the People's Liberation Army one by one, and that only Changchun was left for the Kuomintang troops in the northeast, and that several isolated strongholds such as Shenyang, Fushun, Benxi, and Jinzhou were all transported by plane, Chiang Kai-shek also lost confidence in Wei Lihuang. He changed his original promise to support the defense of the whole northeast, asking Wei Lihuang to open the Shenjin line and withdraw the main force to Jinzhou, but wei Lihuang and his subordinates resolutely opposed it.
Fan Hanjie
In desperation, Chiang Kai-shek tried his best to find generals in the northeast who could carry out his orders. He appointed Fan Hanjie as deputy commander-in-chief of the Northeast "Suppression Command" and director of the Jinzhou Command Post, in an attempt to hand over the military power of the Kuomintang in the northeast to Fan Hanjie, while hanging Wei Lihuang aside.
As a result, not only did the contradictions between Chiang Kai-shek and Wei Lihuang deepen, but also the Kuomintang generals in the northeast were all pregnant with ghosts, and each of them was able to unify his command according to a part of his strength. The military is becoming more and more scattered, and the situation is getting worse and worse.
Attacking is already impossible; retreating, for fear of being wiped out halfway through; but how long can we hold on? Wei Lihuang was very worried, got up from the sofa, and wandered around the office irritably. He had a strong premonition that the Armageddon was about to begin, and that this contest would be fierce.
However, he was at a loss as to where the PLA offensive was directed and when it began. He did not expect that Chiang Kai-shek would use him as a scapegoat in the future and let him bear the responsibility for the failure of the northeast alone.
Wei Lihuang pushed open the window and silently stared at the gray sky, and the air was filled with the smell of gun smoke. In the distance, from time to time came the dull sound of gunfire. The day is September 11.
Close the door and hit the dog
There was a remnant moon hanging in the sky, and the breeze carried a chill and pounced on the army of nocturnal beings. In the western Liaoning Corridor, more than a dozen large armies of the Northeast Field Army traveled at night, and the people and horses shouted happily, and pressed straight to the cities of the Bac Ninh Line.
On the avenue, the lights flickered, and a long line of people could not see the beginning and end. Cars, artillery vehicles, cavalry, infantry, and small convoys of grain were surging forward like a rolling torrent.
Northeast Field Army
On September 12, 1948, in accordance with the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China's "Operational Guidelines on the Liaoshen Campaign", the Northeast Field Army swung south and launched an attack on the enemy's rear.
The People's Liberation Army, with 6 columns and the main force of artillery and 3 independent divisions of zhihe, suddenly attacked and annihilated the scattered defenders on the north-south-nanjing line of Jinzhou and annihilated them one by one; deployed near Xinmin with 3 columns, preparing to participate in the operations on the Beining Line, or cooperating with the northern front troops to annihilate the enemy who might break through Changchun and the enemy who aided the north of Shenyang; 1 column was located in the area north of Shenyang, preparing to block the changchun breakthrough and the enemy aided by Shenyang north; and 1 column and 6 independent divisions and artillery columns continued to besiege Changchun. And actively attacked the enemy to confuse the enemy, covering the rapid transfer of the main force to the south. The Liaoshen Campaign thus began.

The cannons rumbled, the guns roared, and the sound of rushing and killing resounded through the clouds. The enemy did not dream that the main force of the People's Liberation Army would ignore Shenyang and Changchun, and directly attack the line from Jinzhou to Tangshan, and many Kuomintang troops had already become prisoners before they could figure out what was going on.
After the battle began, the People's Liberation Army captured Changli and the area west of it on the same day, and completed the encirclement of the enemy in Xingcheng, Shahousuo, Suizhong and other places. By the end of September, they had successively conquered the key points of Beidaihe, Gaoqiao, Tashan, Xingcheng, Shahousuo, and Suizhong, cutting off the connection between Jinzhou and Tangshan, and cutting off the land transportation of the enemy in north China to reinforce the northeast.
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has tightened its grip on Jinzhou
At the same time, the People's Liberation Army stepped up its tightening of the encirclement of Jinzhou. On September 16, two columns of the People's Liberation Army inserted themselves between Yixian and Jinzhou, and after two days of fierce fighting, they tightly surrounded the enemy in Yixian County.
Yixian is a small county in the north of Jinzhou, but it is a strategic location militarily. It is about 45 kilometers away from Jinzhou, which is a barrier for the safety and cover of the side of Beining Road in the north of Jinzhou, and it can keep the traffic inside and outside the pass uninterrupted.
The Kuomintang army believes that if you want to protect the northeast, you must defend Jinzhou, and if you want to defend Jinzhou, you must protect Yixian County.
The Provisional Twentieth Division of the Kuomintang Army
Therefore, the enemy sent heavy troops to garrison this small YiXian County, with the Provisional Twentieth Division of the Nationalist Army, which had been trained by the American Advisory Group, and a local team of about 10,000 people. The enemy built bunkers, fortifications, mines, and strongholds everywhere inside and outside the city, forming a so-called three-dimensional network of fire with a vast depth; coupled with the reinforcements of the land and air forces in Jinzhou and Shenyang during the battle, the enemy in Yixian was very confident in defending the enemy. Division commander Wang Shigao once boasted that the defenders of Yixian County were strong and well-armed, and no one should think of getting any closer!
However, claiming to be an impregnable defensive position did not stop the PLA from advancing. In view of the situation in which the enemy's firepower crisscrosses and layers of fortification are crossed, the PLA adopts the tactic of attacking point by point, first concentrating artillery fire to bombard the main offensive positions, and then violently pressing the two flanks of the strongholds with light and heavy machine guns, and then attacking and occupying them in one fell swoop with infantry.
At night, the People's Liberation Army carried out a feint attack, launched the main force to dig tunnels, approached the defending enemy positions, forced the enemy to throw away his armor, and sneaked back, and the enemy positions in Yixian County were shrinking day by day.
The 3rd Column and 2nd Column 5th Division of the Northeast Field Army
On September 26, the 3rd Column, 2nd Column 5th Division and artillery column of the Northeast Field Army began the battle to capture Yixian County. Under the fierce attack of the People's Liberation Army day and night, the Yixian position was stripped layer by layer, and by the 29th, most of the strongholds outside the city had been captured.
The defenders of Yixian County frequently called for help.
They expected Jinzhou to send large troops to break the siege; or they hoped that the Air Force would bomb with all its might to contain the PLA offensive. However, they did not wait for anything. On the afternoon of the 27th, i finally expected a plane. The plane was afraid of being shot down by anti-aircraft guns, so it just circled a few times at a high altitude, fired a row of guns, dropped a communication bag, and slipped away.
Originally, it had come specifically to deliver Chiang Kai-shek's handwritten letter to division commander Wang Shigao. The letter reads: "Shigao Wudi, the safety of YiXian County, affected the entire northeast war situation. The division's bravery in annihilating the enemy for several days was particularly commendable. Director Fan (Han Jie) of Jinzhou has now been ordered to vigorously reinforce, and Shang Wang encourages the officers and men to continue to work hard to do their best..."
The next morning, three more planes arrived, and after being bombarded by the anti-aircraft artillery of the People's Liberation Army, the planes panicked and dropped a lot of ammunition, and then fled.
As a result, most of the parachutes fell to the plaster-occupied areas of the People's Liberation Army, and the soldiers shouted happily: "Chiang Kai-shek has sent ammunition to our People's Liberation Army!" After that, the defenders of Yixian County could no longer receive any assistance, but instead received an urgent telegram from Gu Zhutong, chief of the general staff: We must hold out for a month and wait for assistance to counterattack! However, by the time they received the telegram, the Plaster had already reached the foot of the city wall.
In fact, jinzhou does not want to reinforce Yixian. Fan Hanjie tried to reinforce Yixian with the provisional 22nd Division and the cavalry regiment of the 93rd Army, but was fiercely blocked by the 8th and 9th Columns of the People's Liberation Army, and all the cavalry regiments were annihilated and the regimental commander was captured; the 22nd Division also suffered heavy losses and had to return to Jinzhou.
The defenders of Yixian County saw that the aid was exhausted, and they could only be eliminated if they held on, and the division commander Wang Shigao decided to break through after dark on October 1. And this time; the enemy was one step slower. Without waiting for the enemy to move, the Plakmen launched a general attack on the morning of October 1 after quickly clearing the outlying strongholds. After 4 hours of fierce fighting, that is, breaking through the city defenses, completely annihilating the enemy's provisional 20th Division, the division commander, the deputy division commander and most of the officers under his command were captured. The gateway to Jinzhou was opened.
At this point, the western Liaoning Corridor, except for the two isolated points of Jinzhou and Jinxi, was occupied by our army. The enemy of Jinzhou was completely trapped in the siege of our army and could not move a single step.
At this time, the enemy woke up like a dream. They finally realized that the first attack direction of the Liaoshen Campaign was Jinzhou. Moreover, jinzhou is not the only one at risk. Jinzhou was the throat of the northeast, and once Jinzhou was lost, the entire Kuomintang army in the northeast became a turtle in an urn.
Fan Hanjie's telegram begging for help flew to Nanjing one by one. Chiang Kai-shek hurriedly deployed and personally planned to aid Jin. However, it was too late. The gates had been blocked; the situation of the Northeast Field Army closing the doors and fighting dogs had taken shape.
Blood Tower Hill
On the surface of the Huludao Sea, the cruiser Chongqing rode the wind and waves to the seashore, and Chiang Kai-shek stood in front of the deck railing, picking up binoculars from time to time to look at the Tashan position in front of him.

Gui Yongqing, commander of the Navy, Hou Jingru, commander of the Seventeenth Corps of the North China "Suppression General," Luo Zemin, director of the Operations Department of the Ministry of National Defense, and Yu Jishi, director of the Military Affairs Bureau of the Presidential Office, all stood solemnly aside, and they watched Chiang Kai-shek's expression nervously.
Chiang Kai-shek stepped into the battleship conference hall, leaned down to look at the map on the table, and said to the generals on both sides of the service: "This time our army has made a surprise advance from Huludao to the east and attacked the main force of Lin Biao's invasion of Jinzhou.
Lin Biao's main force
Whether you can annihilate Lin Biao's main force in one fell swoop and reverse the situation in the northeast depends on whether you can capture Tashan as scheduled. As he spoke, he looked around and smiled softly, "Can I wish you all success?"
The generals looked at each other and bowed their heads to avoid Chiang Kai-shek's sharp gaze. Only Que Hanqian, commander of the Fifty-fourth Army, stepped forward with some indiscretion and replied: "We have 11 divisions on our side of Tashan, and Lin Biao has only 2 columns, and our troops are absolutely superior."
This operation has the strong cooperation of the navy and air force, and if it cannot be taken down, and I will die in shame without the sanctions of the president. Chiang Kai-shek nodded his approval, then walked over to Gui Yongqing and asked, "Can your naval guns hit Tashan?" ”
"Yes. Moreover, the ships are full of shells! "Shoot it all out and blow up Tower Hill!"
Suddenly, shells rained down on the Tashan position, and the entire Tashan was engulfed by artillery fire.
At present, Chiang Kai-shek is determined to break the siege of Jinzhou at all costs. In late September, news of the crisis in Jinzhou came, and Chiang Kai-shek was deeply disturbed by this. He hurriedly summoned Wei Lihuang to Nanjing and forced Shenyang to send troops to support Jinzhou.
Wei Lihuang believed that the troops would be wiped out if they left Shenyang, and refused to accept the order. Ignoring Wei Lihuang's objections, Chiang Kai-shek insisted on sending troops to support Jinzhou and sent Gu Zhutong, chief of the general staff, to supervise the battle.
Gu Zhutong repeatedly convened a meeting of northeastern generals in Shenyang, urging troops to relieve the siege of Jinzhou. Wei Lihuang swore an oath: "Out of Liaoxi, the whole army will be destroyed, you don't believe it, I will draw a cross with you." After many quarrels, Wei Lihuang was still firmly opposed to the implementation of the order to aid Jin, and most of the senior generals also supported Wei Lihuang's proposal.
Gu Zhutong
Gu Zhutong could not persuade Wei Lihuang and returned to Nanjing in despair.
Chiang Kai-shek was very angry after hearing Gu Zhutong's report, and personally flew to Shenyang on October 2, convened a military conference above the commander of the army, and decided to organize the Shenyang Chiang Kai-shek army into a defensive corps and an attack corps.
Zhou Fu was appointed commander of the defensive corps and remained in Shenyang; Liao Yaoxiang was made commander of the attack corps, leading 5 armies and 12 American mechanized divisions to attack western Liaoning and relieve the siege of Jinzhou.

Chiang Kai-shek flew to Beiping
On October 3, Chiang Kai-shek flew to Beiping and decided to dispatch elite troops from North China to land on Huludao by sea, plus 11 divisions of the original troops in Huludao and Jinxi, from Jinxi to the north to aid Jinzhou.
In order to coordinate the actions of the reinforcements, on October 6, Chiang Kai-shek personally took a warship to Huludao to deploy and command.
The enemy unexpectedly encountered an extremely stubborn resistance from the People's Liberation Army at Tashan.
Tashan Mountain is bordered by the vast Bohai Sea, west of the majestic Hongluo Mountain, is a ten-kilometer wide undulating area, there is no dangerous terrain to rely on, it is very difficult to defend, however, the tower mountain, which is not more than 100 meters high, is like Mount Tai blocking the road from Jinxi to Jinzhou.
The Battle of Tashan Blockade was planned
With the strength of 2 divisions and the coordination of 2 independent divisions of the eleventh column, the 4th Column of the Northeast Field Army held its position, fought bravely, and held the only passage for the reinforcements to advance north, so that Chiang Kai-shek's wishful thinking finally fell short.
The Battle of Tower Hill was fought extremely hard. From dawn on October 10, the enemy, under the cover of aircraft and naval guns, with the strength of 6 divisions, pounced on the Tashan position. The enemy plane dropped bombs at low altitude, the shells were dense as swarms of locusts, and within tens of minutes, 5 dry rounds of shells were dropped. The earth was shaking violently, and the fortifications were all destroyed.
Immediately afterward, the enemy took the lead in a dense storm formation, with the company, battalion, and regimental commander, and the supervising team pressed back, regardless of the terrain conditions, like a group of mad dogs, "wow" screaming and rushing upwards. The front fell, and the back stepped over the corpse and charged.
Battle of Tower Hill
In half a day, the enemy launched more than a dozen fierce rounds of attacks. Some desperate enemies and soldiers of our army mixed together to engage in a bloody battle of white blades, fiercely fighting for positions. Forward bunkers, pillboxes, communication trenches, trenches, gain and loss, loss and recovery, showing a state of tug-of-war.
The company of the Thirty-fourth Regiment of our army guarding the head of The village of Tashan suffered heavy casualties, and the enemy took advantage of the situation to break into a position on the right side of the village, and the situation was very critical. Bao Inchuan, deputy battalion commander of the first battalion who led the troops to garrison the forward position, immediately led the soldiers to support, and organized a company of sporadic personnel, clerks, correspondents, etc. to fight with the enemy.
The warriors shouted, "Live and die with the position!" "In the face of the enemy pouring in, the more courageous the Vietnamese war. All the light and heavy machine guns and small steel guns in the position were red, and the grenades were thrown in bundles at the enemy group. Later, the line soldiers simply raised their bayonets and engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat.
The warriors shouted, "Live and die with the position!" "In the face of the enemy pouring in, the more courageous the Vietnamese war.
Finally, the enemy could not resist, leaving a large number of dead bodies, and they all retreated backwards, and the positions that had been previously broken were retaken.
In order to strengthen the garrison of the position, Bao Inchuan commanded the battle during the day, directed the digging of fortifications at night, connected the positions with trenches, and built shooting and defensive holes.
Although the enemy fired thousands of shells at this position every day and organized multiple charges, under the fire net of heroic warriors, the enemy attacks were repeatedly defeated.
After the war, the first company led by Bao Inchuan won the award banner of "Sticking to Mount Taishan"; Bao Inchuan was awarded the title of "Hero of Tashan Mountain", and the 34th regiment he belonged to was awarded the "Hero Regiment of Tashan Garrison".
After several days and nights of onslaught, the Kuomintang army on Huludao did not advance at all, and Chiang Kai-shek was anxious like an ant on a hot pot, scurrying around everywhere.
Chiang Kai-shek's words
Chiang Kai-shek flew to Jinxi, summoned the reinforcement generals to give a lecture, and scolded: "You are not a thing, you have so many troops, and you are equipped with a navy and air force to fight together, you can't even conquer Tashan Mountain, you are not worthy of being a Huangpu student, you are locusts, locusts!" He immediately decided to take out the independent Ninety-fifth Division directly under the "North China Suppression General" that had been unwilling to be used to attack Tashan, and transferred Luo Qi, the teacher of the Ninety-fifth Division and then the director of the North China Supervision Of the Ministry of National Defense, to supervise the battle.
The independent Ninety-fifth Division, known as the "Zhao Zilong Division", became the ace of the Kuomintang for "not losing a single machine gun" in many years of combat. As soon as Luo Qi arrived in Jinxi, he shouted arrogantly, "There is no position that 'Zhao Zilong Division' can't take!" He was anxious to show his hand in front of Chiang Kai-shek and used a "trick": he established a huge organization of war supervision in the troops, stipulated supervision at all levels, and killed those who were cowardly. At the cost of 500,000 yuan per person, a large number of backbone elements were bribed, and a "death squad" of "preferring to die rather than retreat" was organized.
The "death squad" held high the banner of the "Zhao Zilong Division" and launched a "wave-like" impact on the Tashan position. The first wave of the shock was always a carbine, firing alternately during the attack. The first wave of enemies fell in front of the intensive fire, and the second wave raised their flags and fired a salvo of light machine guns.
Immediately after that, a third wave of all officers came up again. They fortified the corpses as activity fortifications and advanced step by step towards our army's positions. After a few rounds, the enemy once again broke through the position on the eastern side.
