Fuel cell buses are currently equipped with eight hydrogen refueling stations. As an important component of new energy vehicles, fuel cell vehicles have the advantages of good environmental performance, short filling time and long mileage.

Good news! Shanghai will launch 31 hydrogen-fueled buses one after another! What are some of the "different" things about them?

With the continuous strengthening of national policy support, Shanghai is carrying out the pioneering demonstration of China's fuel cell vehicle technology research and development and industrialization.

In December 2018, six fuel cell buses were piloted in Jiading Bus No. 114, accumulating experience for the technical iteration, upgrading, operation and maintenance of fuel cell vehicles. This year, Shanghai actively responded to the requirements of the five ministries and commissions of the state, and joined hands with Suzhou, Nantong, Jiaxing, Zibo, Ordos and Ningxia Ningdong Energy and Chemical Base to jointly establish the "1+6" Shanghai urban agglomeration, forming a new model of fuel cell vehicle urban agglomeration with "medium and long-distance + medium and heavy-duty" application scenarios. At the same time, 31 new fuel cell buses will be launched in Jiading, Jinshan, Fengxian and Lingang.

The appearance of hydrogen fuel buses is almost the same as that of pure electric buses, and the more obvious feature is that there is a raised part on the top of the rear of the vehicle, and the hydrogen cylinder is "hidden" below. According to reports, fuel vehicles and pure electric vehicles are both electric drives, the difference is that the former has a hydrogen system. Six cylinders that store hydrogen are transported to the fuel cell system through pipelines and converted into electrical energy.

Compared with pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel vehicles have unique advantages. Fuel refueling takes about 15 minutes, which is significantly lower than the charging time of pure electric vehicles, and the cruising range is longer, reaching 400 to 500 kilometers, which can effectively improve operational efficiency. At the same time, it is very "antifreeze" and can achieve a fast start-up without auxiliary heat at minus 30 °C.

For Shanghai, the "upper position" of hydrogen fuel buses is not a brain rush to the outlet. At this stage, the new energy path of Shanghai buses is mainly pure electric vehicles, supplemented by plug-in hybrid vehicles, and moderate pilot fuel cell vehicles. Wang Dajun, deputy director of the Science and Technology Information Department of the Municipal Transportation Commission, said that pure electric bus technology is relatively mature, supporting charging facilities are relatively perfect, and it has large-scale promotion conditions. Retain a certain amount of plug-in hybrid vehicles, mainly considering the bus to take into account the emergency transport support function. Fuel cell vehicles are currently positioned as pilots because there is still a certain gap between their reliability, economy, convenience and the actual needs of bus operations.

At present, Shanghai has introduced support policies such as subsidies for the construction of hydrogen refueling stations and operating subsidies to promote the reduction of hydrogen refueling costs. At the same time, Shanghai adheres to the principle of not increasing the burden on enterprises, and gives special subsidies for public transportation from the two aspects of vehicle purchase and operation. In the future, we will continue to track the demonstration operation of fuel cell buses, actively support the pilot work, and gradually expand the scale of fuel cell bus demonstrations.
