According to the Association of Passenger Vehicles, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 412,000 units in January, up 141.4% year-on-year and down 18.5% month-on-month. Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 347,000 units in January, up 132.0% year-on-year and down 27.0% month-on-month, and domestic retail penetration was 16.6%, up 10 percentage points from 6.8% in January 2021. In January, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in independent brands was 31.4%, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in luxury vehicles was 10.2%, while the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in mainstream joint venture brands was only 2.5%.
In January, the sales of high-end electric vehicle models increased strongly, and the trend of low-end electric vehicles was also strong, and the dumbbell structure of the pure electric market improved, of which A00-class wholesale sales of 105,000 vehicles, accounting for 32% of pure electric vehicles; A0-class wholesale sales of 51,000, accounting for 15% of pure electric vehicles; A-class electric vehicles accounted for 22% of pure electric vehicles; B-class electric vehicles reached 101,000 units, down 14% month-on-month, accounting for 30% of pure electric shares.
Among the TOP10 new energy passenger car companies, in January, five companies, GAC E-An, Nezha, Chery, Geely, and BYD, achieved a month-on-month increase, of which GAC E-An increased by more than 10% month-on-month. Tesla, Great Wall, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Xiaopeng and Ideal fell by more than double digits month-on-month, of which Tesla fell by 72.6% month-on-month, and Great Wall and SAIC-GM-Wuling fell by more than 30% month-on-month.
Specifically, BYD sold 92,788 units in January (excluding 313 exports), up 0.01 units month-on-month, ranking first. Dolphin sold 10,602 units, up 5.9% month-on-month, with cumulative sales of more than 40,000 units.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, which ranked second, sold 40,007 vehicles in January (according to the Association), down 33.7% month-on-month. In 2021, the cumulative sales of SAIC-GM-Wuling GSEV (Global Small Pure Electric Vehicle Architecture) exceeded 750,000 units, and the cumulative sales of Hongguang MINI EV exceeded 550,000 units.
Chery New Energy sold 21,179 vehicles in January (according to the Association), up 3.3% month-on-month, from the fifth place in December to the third place in January 2022. According to Chery's official data, Chery's new energy vehicle sales were 20,635 units, up 179.6% year-on-year. In January, Chery QQ Ice Cream and Little Ant models sold 19,391 units, up 189.8% year-on-year, breaking the historical record of Chery New Energy's monthly sales.
In terms of specific models, Chery Ant sold 9,407 units in January, an increase of 50.9% year-on-year. Chery QQ Ice Cream, which was officially launched in December last year, sold 9,984 units in January this year, an increase of 19% month-on-month, and its cumulative orders since its listing exceeded 70,000 units, becoming a well-deserved "dark horse" this year.
Tesla's domestic sales in January were 19,346 units (excluding exports of 40,500 units), down 72.6% month-on-month and fourth. At present, the Shanghai Gigafactory has become Tesla's main export center. Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, which has been operating for only two years, has shouldered the "half of Tesla's global delivery" in 2021 and become Tesla's main export hub.
Geely Automobile sold 16,592 units in January (excluding 444 units exported), up 2.5% month-on-month and ranked fifth. Geely's official data shows that Geely New Energy sold 17,928 vehicles in January, an increase of about 641% year-on-year, a record high. The main brand geometry car sold 10,229 units in January, up 391% year-on-year. The much-watched Extreme Krypton auto market also performed well, and although it was once caught in the "configuration" storm, it did not seem to be much affected by the delivery of 3,530 units in January.
GAC Aean, which ranked sixth, sold 16,031 units, up 10.6% month-on-month and 118% year-on-year. At present, GAC Aeon owns a number of main models such as AION S (PLUS), AION Y, AION V and AION LX (PLUS). AION LX PLUS was just listed at the beginning of this year, and the official guidance price is 28.66-45.96 million yuan. Great Wall Motor's sales of 13,373 units (excluding 408 units exported) decreased by 36.1% month-on-month and ranked seventh. Official figures showed that the Euler brand sold 13,229 units in January, up 28.9% year-on-year. Euler Good Cat sold 9,020 units in January, up 333.4% year-on-year.
