On Tuesday, three U.S. graduate students sued Harvard, saying it ignored nearly a decade of sexual harassment and retaliation by a prominent anthropology professor and allowed a system that protects the reputation of powerful teachers and schools at the expense of students.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Massachusetts, accuses Harvard of ignoring many warning signs that led renowned professor John Comaroff to sexually harass a student and harm her career, as well as the careers of two classmates who defended her.

The case raises the bigger question that academic hierarchies are inherently unbalanced, under which tenured faculty members have a huge influence on the careers of the graduate students they recommend.
