Mothers who suffer from postpartum depression

It's like having a baby

A disease that almost no one can understand

According to survey data, 10%-15% of women develop postpartum depression, and 50%-80% of women develop postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is a common type of disease in women's mental disorders, generally within 2 weeks after childbirth, depression, sensitivity, suspiciousness, irritability, sadness, irritability and other negative emotions, and in severe cases, suicide and expanded suicidal behavior that hurts children will occur.

What are the specific manifestations of postpartum depression?

For example, pregnant women may often feel anxious, depressed; obvious lack of interest or pleasure in all or most of the activities, often crying for no reason; feeling exhausted, confused and helpless; being very true to everything, nervous and irritable; sleeping disorders; feeling meaningless or guilty in everything; decreasing thinking ability or inattention; and even the thought of death.

What are the causes of postpartum depression?

The vast majority of women experience postpartum depression to a greater or lesser extent, which may be related to the following factors. 1. Estrogen is "doing harm". The sharp change in the level of estrogen in the female postpartum body is one of the important physiological factors for postpartum depression. During pregnancy, women's internal environment will change. The large fluctuation of estrogen causes the internal environment of the body to lose its stable balance, so it is prone to postpartum depression. 2. The role change is too sudden. She used to be the "treasure in the palm of her parents" and a working woman, but because she had a child, everything seemed to change overnight. In addition, some pregnant women may need to adapt to living with the elderly, and some gaps and contradictions in living habits and concepts will also induce the emergence of postpartum depression. 3. Lack of emotional support. Women have experienced various "tortures" during pregnancy, and they have to be on standby for 24 hours often because of breastfeeding and other issues after childbirth, which often makes the mothers' bodies exhausted. There are also some husbands or families who put the burden of raising newborns on the mother, so that the mother lacks emotional support and comfort, at this time, it is very easy to fall into depression. In addition, there are some women who have a history of depression before childbirth, and who are more sensitive and introverted, and the risk of postpartum depression may be greater than that of ordinary women.

How to prevent and intervene in postpartum depression?

1.Learn about health care during pregnancy and childbirth. Mothers and their families must learn the knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth, correctly understand the physiological and psychological knowledge related to pregnancy and childbirth, promote mutual support and communication between family members, and reduce the pressure on pregnant women and mothers. The husband's support and understanding are of great significance to the mother, so the husband should avoid verbal stimulation, be patient with the mother, understand and support his lover, and strengthen the care and care for the mother.

2. Strengthen the health care awareness of medical staff on maternal psychology. Medical staff should pay attention to language skills and use more appropriate language expressions to reduce the psychological pressure of pregnant women.

3. Active treatment. If we find that our relatives, friends, colleagues or ourselves may have the potential to suffer from postpartum depression, then the most effective way is to seek the help of a psychologist for formal treatment. At present, a combination of psychotherapy and drug treatment is mostly used for postpartum depression.

As a mother herself

Is there any way to relieve depressed emotions?

Having depression does not mean that it is depression, and the following methods can help you reduce stress and release anxiety.

1. Knit sweater. Knitting sweaters may seem like a very common activity, but the process requires full participation in cognitive function, which is in itself a behavioral therapy. By knitting sweaters, you can improve your attention and short-term memory, improve your executive function, and you can also achieve the purpose of alleviating depression. Probably few people knit sweaters now, we can do handicrafts, the effect is the same.

2. Draw. As a tool for the expression of emotions, painting is widely used in psychological counseling and psychotherapy, and painting therapy has more advantages than traditional talkative psychotherapy.

3. Listen to music. Releases dopamine and improves sleep quality.

4. Keep a journal. Journaling also enhances self-experience and increases presence.

5. Bask in the sun. Autumn and winter are the high incidence of depression season, many people feel that the weather is gloomy and depressed, and the mood will be much better when the sun is shining. There's nothing to do to get more sun.

6. Exercise more. It can divert the attention of depressed patients, vent emotions, reduce tension and anxiety, etc.

7. Increase outdoor activities, close to nature, but also let people's sensory system fully activate, let people fully experience the feeling of "living in the moment", give a chance to get along with the "self", let yourself know yourself more clearly, believe in yourself.

Older generations would think of our time

There is no postpartum depression

Young people are just being pretentious

Many older generations believe that with the development of social progress and medical technology, "painless childbirth" gives women a more safe and healthy guarantee, and postpartum depression is a unique pretense for young people, and the older generation in the past is not affected at all. This is a false view.

On the one hand, in the past, many women mainly focused on food and clothing, career and family, and did not take enough care of their own bodies;

On the other hand, due to the lack of medical level and popular science knowledge at that time, people's understanding of postpartum depression is not deep, the degree of attention is not high, and even some people take this as "shame", do not correctly express the state of "postpartum depression", the family does not have this knowledge, and some of the emotional changes of the mother are not understood, so this phenomenon has not been concerned by the public. In fact, postpartum depression is a normal childbirth reaction, and it is not directly related to the age, education and income of the mother.

Mothers with postpartum depression

What is the impact on the child?

A new study found that mothers were depressed after childbirth and that children were more likely to develop serious violence by age 11 than other children of the same age. Babies can direct attention and control emotions through early interactions with caregivers. Mothers with postpartum depression lack reasonable interaction with their babies and are prone to communication deficits. Depressed mothers are unable to calm their babies down, let alone help their babies learn to "calm down", resulting in a more violent behavior later in their children's lives. Therefore, early intervention for women at high risk of depression is essential.
