Why did Du Yuming, a famous general of the Nationalist Army, ask this person before his death: Are you a communist?

At the end of 1948, the magnificent Battle of Huaihai broke out. At that time, Kuomintang Defense Minister He Yingqin drew up a battle plan, sent it to Chiang Kai-shek for examination and approval, and then issued it to the relevant Kuomintang troops for implementation.

However, before this battle plan could be delivered to the Kuomintang troops, it was sent to the command organ of the People's Liberation Army by a CCP agent lurking inside the Kuomintang. That is to say, the Platon Army knew about the combat plan drawn up by the Kuomintang Ministry of National Defense earlier than the Kuomintang troops. The CCP agent's name was Guo Rujie.

Why did Du Yuming, a famous general of the Nationalist Army, ask this person before his death: Are you a communist?

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Guo Rujie gradually entered the upper echelons of the Kuomintang regime from an ordinary instructor at the Army University. After being appreciated by Chen Cheng and being able to serve as the commander of the Provisional 5th Division, he was also highly regarded by Xue Yue because he was good at commanding in the Battle of Changsha, and asked him to concurrently serve as the captain of the Ninth Theater Officer Training Regiment Colonel Brigade. He was also transferred to the National Defense Research Institute, which was also concurrently vice president, to serve as a research committee member at the National Defense Research Institute, which trained "all-round generals," and was appointed by Chiang Kai-shek, who had appointed himself as the head of the regiment, as the deputy commander of the "Central Training Corps, and became the "elite of the military circles" in Chiang Kai-shek's mind.

Throughout the Liberation War, Guo Rugui risked his life to provide our party and our army with a lot of core military intelligence through Ren Lianru, who traveled between Ningbo and Shanghai, and made a special contribution to the victory of the Liberation War. Guo Rugui, who is relatively humble in his life, has always refused to talk about these things more, saying that talking about these things again is not a show of merit? In the memoirs he wrote in his later years, he only praised Ren Lianru and said in a general tone: After he became the director of the War Department, "Comrade Lianru traveled more closely to Ninghu, transmitted more information, and took greater risks."

Why did Du Yuming, a famous general of the Nationalist Army, ask this person before his death: Are you a communist?

As early as the victory or defeat of the Huaihai Campaign, Du Yuming was determined to abandon Xuzhou and hold on to Bengbu when he attended the military conference convened by Chiang Kai-shek in Nanjing. Because he had some doubts about Guo Rujie, he did not speak at the meeting, but only submitted an individual petition to Chiang Kai-shek after the meeting, and was approved. Unexpectedly, on the way to move the division, Chiang Kai-shek changed his determination three times, first asking him to lead his troops to relieve the siege of Huang Wei's corps; then ordering him to "never advance further toward Yongcheng and evade the battle in a roundabout way"; and soon receiving Chiang Kai-shek's order to "stop waiting on the spot", which increased the confusion of his subordinate units.

Du Yuming had already received intelligence that Guo Rugui was a "co-spy" who went deep into the center, but for a while he had no real evidence and did not dare to report to Chiang Kai-shek. Guo Rugui's frequent provision of top-secret military intelligence to the CCP was almost cracked by Kuomintang agents.

Du Yuming saw that Gu Zhutong had no doubts about Guo Rujie, so he turned to report the situation directly to Chiang Kai-shek. However, Chiang Kai-shek did not take Du Yuming's words seriously at all. Then, since Du Yuming has no evidence at all, why did he say that Guo Rujie was an agent of the CCP who broke into the Kuomintang?

In 1949, Du Yuming was captured by the People's Liberation Army during the Battle of Huaihai and entered the War Criminals Management Center, where he underwent a 10-year reform. On December 4, 1959, Du Yuming received a notice of amnesty from the Supreme People's Court, received a pardon, and became a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

On May 7, 1981, Du Yuming died of kidney failure in Beijing. Before his death, Guo Rugui went to visit, and Du Yuming grabbed Guo Rugui's hand and said: I ask you one last time, were you a Communist Party at that time? At this time, Guo Rugui's identity was still not disclosed, so he could only tell Du Yuming: We belong to different political views.
