Under the new ideas of the Republic of China period, Hu Shi not only did not divorce Jiang Dongxiu, but was very afraid of the inside.

Jiang Dongxiu was born in a family of official eunuchs, attended private school for several years, was rough in writing, and dared to act rashly. In order to defend his marriage, Jiang Dongxiu had a kitchen knife. Because of his cousin Cao Chengying, Hu Shi showed Jiang Dongxiu that he wanted a divorce. Jiang Dongxiu took a kitchen knife and said that divorce was OK, first killed Hu Shi's two sons and himself, and then divorced, Hu Shi immediately raised his hand and surrendered.
When Hu Shi was handling the marriage between Lu Xiaoman and Xu Zhimo, Jiang Dongxiu was jealous and scolded Hu Shi, Xu Zhimo, and Lu Xiaoman in front of his friends, saying that he wanted to expose the true face of the so-called intellectuals.
Once in the United States, Hu Shi was not at home, and a thief climbed into the window of the house. Jiang Dongxiu was doing it in the kitchen, she saw the thief, just stunned, and then quickly walked to the door and opened the door, shouting an English word to the thief: "GO!" The thief also obeyed and obediently left.
Hu Shi, on the other hand, was not satisfied with his fear of his wife, and laughed at himself that the country where he was afraid of his wife would be a more democratic country.
Second, the red face confidant Wei Liansi
Hu Shi's confidante Wei Liansi is an American, and the two met in the best years. Wei Liansi was Hu Shi's lover when he stayed in the United States, and their lives intersected for 48 years. Wei Liansi had never married in her life and had great respect for Jiang Dongxiu, and Jiang Dongxiu's reaction to her was not as fierce as Cao Chengying's presence.
Wei Liansi once told Hu Shi that he was married, and Hu Shi was very surprised, and Wei Liansi said that he had been married mentally. As for who the spiritual lover is, both sides know it.
Hu Shi spent more than twenty years in the United States, and many of his study abroad diaries were about Wei Liansi.
Hu Shi, who had a marriage contract before going abroad, fell in love with Wei Liansi, the daughter of a university professor, after going abroad, and the two had feelings for each other, but they both knew that this was doomed to a fruitless love affair. However, from hu shi going abroad until hu shi's death, the two had been exchanging letters.
Hu Shi gave Wei Liansi a high evaluation: thoughtful, courageous, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and generous. They talked about everything together, and when they studied abroad, they only communicated and comforted spiritually, and they ended in courtesy.
Ten years apart, goodbye. In 1927, Hu Shi went to the United States again, and Wei Liansi and Hu Shi were reunited, and emotionally produced the sublimation of you and me. In 1933, Hu Shi went to the United States to give a lecture, at this time, they had already passed the age of confusion, and their relationship had surpassed that of ordinary friends. Wei Liansi wrote to Hu Shi afterwards:
"I've got our pitifully small bed, and I miss your body, I miss your little bits and pieces here. I have you, this me, longing for you to have me. ”
In 1953, Hu Shi and Jiang Dongxiu visited the United States together and stayed with Wei Liansi for a month. Wei Liansi rejected all the men who pursued her, she only had Hu Shi in her heart, but she was very rational, she only wanted to maintain the status quo, so that the years were quiet.
Later, Wei Liansi repeatedly said that he funded the translation of the article for Hu Shiying and published it, but Hu Shi refused. However, Wei Liansi, who had poor living conditions in his later years, still remembered this matter until Hu Shi's death, which showed that he was sincere about Hu.
Moreover, later, Wei Liansi also expressed all the correspondence between Hu Shi and himself before his death to Jiang Dongxiu, and preserved them as first-hand information for future research on Hu Shi.
Third, the red face confidant Cao Chengying
Dare to love and dare to hate, because of her husband's concubine and divorced her husband, the eyes can not hide the melancholy feelings, and the talented daughter Cao Chengying and Hu Shi, who have devoted their lives to learning, have been deeply in love, especially during Hu Shi's illness by the West Lake, the two are like husband and wife, and do not shy away from others. The days of such a fairy companion are hurried and hurried, as short as only three months.
Cao Chengying took on a role as a bridesmaid at Hu Shi's wedding in 1917. At that time, Cao Chengying was 15 years old and Hu Shi was 26 years old. Hu Shi is a gentle and elegant warm man, with a beautiful appearance and a lot of femininity.
What are the relatives of Hu Shi and Cao Chengying? It was a kind of marriage relationship, and Hu Shi's two older brothers married Cao Chengying's two older sisters. It is such a relationship, Hu Shi called Cao Chengying's cousin, in fact, there is no blood relationship.

Cao Chengying is smart and studious, has a deep foundation in traditional Chinese studies, and is a famous talented woman. Hu Shi and Cao Chengying can be said to have a very common language in this regard, and often communicate with each other.
In 1923, Hu Shi went to the West Lake to recuperate because of his physical illness. So Cao Chengying, who was in the summer vacation, took care of Hu Shi as a relative, or Jiang Dongxiu wrote a trust to Cao Chengying to help take care of Hu Shi. The result was greatly unexpected by Jiang Dongxiu.
Hu Shi was recuperating from illness for three months, with Cao Chengying qingqing me. In Hu Shi's circle of friends, it became a secret that was not a secret. Xu Zhimo and the others all knew about this and told Lu Xiaoman through Xu Zhimo's mouth. Lu Xiaoman passed it on again, and this matter almost became a good story in the literary world.
Therefore, Hu Shi also seriously considered his relationship with Cao Chengying and boldly proposed a divorce. As a result, Jiang Dongxiu swore to defend his marriage to the death, and Hu Shi immediately confessed.
After that, Hu Shi returned to his family and completely put Cao Chengying down. He had loved her for three months, but she had loved him all her life. Cao Chengying used the brilliance of the three months of happiness that Hu Shi gave him to shine in the following decades of his life.
In 1973, after Cao Chengying's death, he had his ashes scattered on the side of the road leading hu shi home, expecting him to reunite with him when his soul returned home.

After Lu Xiaoman married her husband Wang Geng, because Wang Geng was often away, he entrusted Hu Shi and others to help take care of him. During this period, Hu Shi and Lu Xiaoman often had contacts, and slowly the rumors of the two spread.
Jiang Dongxiu often quarreled with Hu Shi and Lu Xiaoman because hu shi and Lu Xiaoman were somewhat close, lest the people of the world not know. Lu Xiaoman knew that Hu Shi would not divorce, and he gradually became less enthusiastic about Hu Shi. Later, after Hu Shi saw that Lu Xiaoman and Xu Zhimo had a good relationship, he wanted to witness the marriage between the two.
