Hu Shi loved Cao Chengying very much. When he learned that she was pregnant, he went home to have a showdown with his wife, Jiang Dongxiu, and decided to divorce her. The second time, Hu Shi mentioned the divorce again. This time, Jiang Dongxiu seemed much calmer, but her attitude made Hu Shi feel more and more frightened. In 1934, on the recommendation of Hu Shi, Cao Chengying went to the College of Agriculture of Cornell University in the United States, obtained a master's degree in 1937, and taught at Anhui University and Fudan University after returning to China, and was the first female professor in the field of agriculture in China.
In 1952, Cao Chengying was transferred to Shenyang Agricultural College to teach, and retired in 1958. Childless and childless, she returned to her hometown of Jixi in 1969, where she lived a lonely life. He died of lung cancer in Shanghai in 1973.
