The leaves of chicken head rice are wide and float on the surface of the water like a disc. The fruit resembles a tall rooster head.

The outermost part of the fruit is wrapped in a layer of thorny shell, which is peeled open to reveal a blue-brown seed-like fruit, and then peeled off the seed skin to reveal the white and fat kernels.

When I was a child, in the ponds in front of and behind the villages of my rural hometown, in the summer, the green leaves of chicken head rice covered the ponds.
