"The Siege of the City" is a novel written by Qian Zhongshu. The first edition was published in 1947 by Shanghai Chenguang Publishing Company.

"Siege of the City" has been admired by many people since its publication. Due to the long period of inability to reprint after 1949, the book gradually faded from view. In the 1960s, Xia Zhiqing, a sinologist in the United States, gave a high evaluation of the book in the History of Modern Chinese Novels, which caused people to pay attention to it again.

Evaluations of it generally focus on two aspects, humorous language and profound observations of life. A lot of people think it's a great work, a work of humor. In addition to the unique language of the characters, the author's interspersed words are also remarkablely witty and humorous. This is a major feature of this book.

Man, beast, ghost

The daily book list | a special edition of modern and contemporary writers - Qian Zhongshu

"Man, Beast, Ghost" was written in the beginning and was advertised without silver here, and the characters and love affairs in the book were all imagined out of thin air. Not only are men good people who are law-abiding, and beasts are tame domestic animals, but ghosts are not unruly wild ghosts; they all live within the scope of this book, and never slip out of the book.

However, the author did not expect that the charm of his work was better than the irony of "Ru Lin Wai Shi" "is the tacit resonance of those authors and readers when they experience the pleasure of creation together, which includes the self-metabolism of a certain class discourse system, the fighting wits and courage of the literati, and the literati anecdotes that claim to be superior to the first and seem to be more stylish but in essence are nothing more than gossip."

Write on the side of life

Life is said to be a big book.

If this is the case in life, then most of the authors can only be regarded as book critics, with the skills of book critics, without having to read a few pages of books, the discussion has already been issued a lot, and the book review has been written and handed over.

However, there is still a kind of person in the world. They feel that the purpose of reading books is not to write book reviews or introductions. They have a kind of amateur pastime casual and calm, and they browse without hurrying. This sporadic sense of randomness is not their conclusion about the entire book. Because they are recognized at any time, they may contradict each other and speak too much. They don't bother to pay attention to it anyway, anyway, unlike book critics who have a great mission to guide readers and teach authors. Who has the power and patience to do those things?

Pipe cone braiding

The word "pipe cone" comes from "Zhuangzi Qiushui". In the "Han Shi Wai Biography", there is: "For example, peeping at the sky with a pipe, and piercing the ground with a cone -- the one who peeps is large, the one who sees is small, the person who stabs is huge, and the person who is hit is small." The title comes from Qian Zhongshu's pen name. Qian Zhongshu once used the pen name "Zhongshu Jun". Tang Hanyu once used "Zhongshujun" to refer to "pen", and in Han Yu's "Biography of Mao Ying" and "New Five Dynasties History Shi Hongzhao Biography", "Guan Chengzi" and "Mao Awl" were also used to refer to "pen". Therefore, the title of the book is the meaning of the compilation of Qian Zhongshu's notes. Qian Zhongshu said in the "Preface to the Compilation of Pipe Cones": "Glance at the omission, and know the small accumulation. Learning has not been enough, the old age has arrived! Sui material simplified its easier to manage Dong, cone finger pipe peeping, first into a series. "
