"My organs feel impaired, sometimes I don't like the environment that is too bright, sometimes I like the feeling of being squeezed, and sometimes I am very sensitive to sound." "The world of adults is very complicated, why do you want to eat, but say you don't?" I don't understand, my mind is simple, all I can understand is the literal meaning. "Sometimes, it's not that I don't like to play with my friends, but I don't know how to play, can you teach me?" They are autistic people, also known as "children of the stars".

Data show that the number of autistic people in China exceeds 10 million, and the number of autistic children exceeds 2 million. On March 31, on the occasion of World Autism Day, Elephant News reporter approached Jiao Yan, founder of Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center, to take you to understand the story behind the "Children of the Stars".

Take the children around to seek medical treatment, and set up the Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center to help more "children of the stars"

Jiao Yan, like many young mothers, looks forward to the arrival of the baby and imagines the happy scene of living with the child. "When the eldest Yun Yun was born at that time, the doctor said that because the child lacked oxygen, there might be sequelae of dystocia." Jiao Yan recalled the scene at that time, and his mood was hard to hide his loss. As the child grew up day by day, she found that the child was always one step slower than her peers in terms of development, whether it was learning to sit, climb, turn over, or talk and walk, all of which were somewhat slow. Due to the limited medical conditions at that time, Jiao Yan looked around for medical treatment, and the results were told: the child had the sequelae of dystocia when he was young, and his mental development was delayed.

The days passed like this day by day, and in the blink of an eye, yun Yun was in kindergarten. "I sent my child to kindergarten and dropped out of school before long." Jiao Yan introduced that the teacher told her that Yun Yun often hid in the corner alone in the kindergarten, not communicating with other children, and when everyone sang, danced, and played games together, he often hid to the side in fear. "Later I learned that among people with autism, some children are particularly sensitive to sound and are afraid of loudness."

Helpless, Jiao Yan had to send his children to a welfare home and do rehabilitation training with some disabled children. Because of this "unavoidable" transfer, Jiao Yan also knew for the first time what autism was, and began to take Yun Yun north to Beijing for rehabilitation training. "I met a Chinese-American in a welfare home, and I learned from her that Yun Yun may have autism."

Jiao Yan took Yun Yun, who is in her 10s, to Beijing for rehabilitation training, but she was devastated. "Kids are missing out on the best time for rehabilitation." Jiao Yan said that at the same time, she also learned that there are many children with autism in the country.

So she returned to Luoyang, conducted a series of visits and investigations, and learned that some children with autism in Luoyang did not have the venue and opportunity for rehabilitation training, so she and her like-minded friend Gu Zaihua founded the Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center.

Referring to the original intention of the establishment, Jiao Yan said: "Because my children missed the best rehabilitation training time, I want to help more such children, I hope they can have the opportunity to live like normal children." At the beginning of their establishment, Jiao Yan and Gu Zaihua relied on their own money and relatives and friends and caring people to raise donations to rent venues and hire professional teachers, etc. "It was difficult at first, and for a year even the teacher's salary could not be paid, but I still used my lover's savings to send it." In this way, Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center persevered in the predicament and slowly developed and grew.

Personalized education for children to help children slowly return to normal life

For the misfortune of his children, Jiao Yan is very sorry, and he also spends more effort to help those school-age children do rehabilitation training, xinxin (pseudonym) is one of them.

In 2013, Xinxin, who was about 4 years old, came to Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center. "When I first came, Xinxin could only simply make an 'ah' sound, and there were some deficiencies in language and action." Gu Zaihua said that Xin Xin was reluctant to play with other children at first, and his personality was very stubborn. He arrives at school early every day and plays the slide for a while before going to class. Every time I encounter bad weather such as rain or wind, I will always lie on the ground and cry because I can't play with the slide. "This is because children with autism will think more rigidly, and it will be unacceptable for things to be changed." Gu Zaihua said.

After a series of personalized rehabilitation training for 1 year, Xinxin can already go to kindergarten normally at the age of 5 or so, and can do rehabilitation training while going to school.

In 2016, Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center reached a cooperation with the education department to jointly pay attention to the education problems of the "children of the stars" and provide free nine-year compulsory education for children with mental disabilities during school age, and Xinxin became the first batch of children to receive compulsory education.

"Due to the particularity of these children, we will assign resource teachers to follow the children to the school for a long time." Gu Zaihua introduced that the main responsibility of the resource teacher is to help those autistic children who enter normal schools, solve some difficulties in learning and life for them, enlighten them in time, and help them adapt to life.

Children with autism will think differently from normal children, and their methods of learning will be different. In order to better help these "children of the stars" and let them feel the bits and pieces of starlight in life, Gu Zaihua has been working hard. "Seeing these children, I am very distressed, and I am even more distressed about the parents who are silently paying behind them, and I want to help them a little more." Gu Zaihua said.

Since the establishment of Luoyang Jinyudian Qizhi Center in 2005, it has grown from the initial 10 children to nearly 300 today. "In the future, I will continue to help those with autism, stick to the original intention, and hope that all people with mental disabilities can be scientifically resettled, and all families of people with mental disabilities can enjoy a normal life." Jiao Yan said that he will adhere to the individualized service to help people with mental disabilities improve their self-care and employability, and improve their quality of life.
