The Zhejiang-Gansu Canal is planned to have a total length of about 760 kilometers, running through the Qiantang River, Poyang Lake, Ganjiang River, Yangtze River, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Ganyue Canal and other water systems. Using the class III waterway planning of navigable thousand-ton ships, it is predicted that the freight volume will be about 25 million tons after opening.

Lanxi City, located in the "waist of six waters" and "seven provinces through the Qu", was once the main port for the export of cash crops in central and western Zhejiang, and goods from overseas were also transferred to Lanxi through Shanghai and Hangzhou and diverted to all parts of western Zhejiang. In the eighteenth year of the Republic of China (1929), the Ministry of Railways of the National Government investigated that the annual transaction volume of Lanxi commerce was 12.89 million silver dollars, 4.37 million yuan for Jinhua, and 780,000 yuan for Yiwu.
