Memories of the Great Northern Wilderness – my intimate contact with rats

Text/book rim voice

Growing up in the courtyard of Beijing, I was afraid of rats since I was a child, and my family lived near Ciqikou at that time. High walls, gray tiles, dark purple wood structure antique doors and windows, window ledges are exquisitely disordered squares, and there are long corridors in front of the door.

The roof of my house is made of sorghum poles, special paper mounting paste, every year before the Spring Festival, I have to ask the mounting worker to mount the paste once. I don't know if the technical work of "shed mounting paste worker" is now extinct? When I was about five years old, I occasionally heard noises from the roof in the middle of the night, and my mother said that the rats had come out to feed again. At that time, I used to stare habitually at the roof when I slept at night, afraid that the rats would fall and hit me on the head.

After going to the countryside in the northern wilderness, I didn't know what rats were. The old staff said that "after contact with mice, it is easy to get an infectious disease called "hemorrhagic fever", the incubation period of this disease is two to three weeks, the early symptoms are fever, headache, sore throat, cough, runny nose, etc., it is easy to be confused with colds, severe high fever, but also life-threatening.

The place in the Zhiqing dormitory is small, and the boxes we brought are stored in the company's previous seed bank. In the autumn of 1970, I went to the seed bank with Zhiqing in the same room to get military coats.

Opening the wooden box, a large rat with round ears, a pointed mouth, a whisker, and a pair of small green bean-like eyes sprang out, frightening me to jump up. Looking down again, there was a nest of hairless gray-white mice squirming in the grass-green army coat, and we both shouted in unison, quickly looking for someone to clear this nest of rats. My beloved coat was so badly caught by rats that I was so frightened that I didn't want to eat for days.

There was also an autumn harvest, and we female intellectuals lined up in the courtyard to shed grain. During the break, we sat on the grain pile and watched the daughters-in-law of several old workers lift up a male worker and mound on the grain pile, which was not lively and made people laugh.

At this time, a female Zhiqing jumped up from the grain pile and shouted: "Rats, rats...", she quickly took off her cotton hat, and a small gray mouse jumped out of the hat. The female Zhiqing was frightened and could not keep her soul, lest she catch "bleeding fever".

The most vivid memory is that one year in the autumn harvest, I took the female Zhiqing in the platoon to the field to pile up the bean stacks. Stacking is to take the beans that the machine has harvested lying in the ground to dry the grain, and then stack them into a large stack at a distance of about fifty meters to facilitate The Cornbein to remove the grain in the field.

Each of us was about five miles long, and the bean stack should be stacked with a sickle in the right hand, and then we should bow our heads and pick up a pile of beans, and then close our left and right hands, and then lift the beans above our heads and send them to the big stack step by step. This method takes more, saves effort and is efficient. I worked quickly, and when I got to the ground, I helped the people who were left behind to finish and rest.

One day, just as I was far ahead, I suddenly felt something in my clothes squirming, like a mouse! I immediately threw away a bunch of beans in my hand and jumped up high, how to jump the mouse just not out of the clothes. The others were far away, and I simply took off my coat, and the rat did not come out; I took off my fleece again, and a gray mouse jumped down and fled in a hurry. It turned out that the rat had crawled from my neck between the fleece and the autumn coat. Fortunately, the rat fell into the fleece coat, and if it fell into the autumn coat, I would be miserable! I was secretly glad. In order not to have intimate contact with rats anymore, I no longer dared to use the efficient method of lifting overhead to stack beans, and the stacking speed was also slowed down.

"Once bitten by a snake, ten years afraid of the well rope", this is not false at all! The story of "I had close contact with mice" made me realize that people have weaknesses, and I was actually defeated by a small mouse without any difficulties.

The picture shows us on our way to work in 1970.
