#The Temperature of Reading #Human culture has been learning from each other and innovating
Martin Puchner: I was struck by two things when trying to understand the evolution of cultures across the globe over thousands of years. The first thing is that cultures have been borrowing from each other from the start. For example, China borrowed Buddhism from India, While Japan borrowed Buddhism from China, And Europe borrowed from the Religion of the Middle East, Christianity. Sometimes, borrowings from these series include strange gaps and detours, such as ancient Greek philosophy, which was forgotten in Europe and preserved in Baghdad before being re-imported into Europe. Equally interesting, Rome decided, for no reason, to translate the entire Greek literary text into Latin and to make Greek culture its ancestor, even though the Romans had no connection with Greece. So, it's a confusing picture. Sometimes cultural imports were imposed on conquered countries. But more often, these imports and exports do not follow clear boundaries of power. More often, the borrowing of culture is not a sign of the weak, but a sign of the strong. #生活日记 #
