In the field of electric vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 has squeezed the Renault Zoe out of the top position of electric vehicles. According to analytics firm JETO Dynamics, the Tesla Model 3 also rose to 17th place in the overall ranking of Best Sellers in Europe in 2021 from 41st in 2020 and surpassed some of the most popular models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Peugeot 3008 SUVs.

Tesla's rise is in stark contrast to the decline of traditional car darlings like the Golf. The Volkswagen Golf saw the largest decline in market share, but still maintained its longstanding position as Europe's best-selling car.

Last September, the Tesla Model 3 briefly became Europe's best-selling car, beating the Volkswagen Golf and other common internal combustion engine best-selling models, and the first time that an electric car surpassed an internal combustion engine to become Europe's best-selling car.

The Volkswagen ID.3 pure electric compact hatchback launched in 2020 failed to replicate Tesla's success, ranking 53rd overall in the car.

In 2021, overall car sales in the UK fell to 11.8 million units, the lowest level since 1985. FELIPE Munoz, an analyst at JATO, said: "Crises after crisis have had a negative impact on both the demand for the automotive market and the number of registrations. The continued uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the chronic shortage of semiconductors, is a perfect storm for the automotive industry. ”

Automakers, including Volkswagen and Stellantis, are spending billions of dollars launching a range of plug-in hybrid and battery-powered cars, while consumers respond to generous subsidies for electric vehicles that help the transportation industry reduce emissions. JATO expects that by 2022, sales of electric vehicles in the UK will surpass diesel vehicles.

In an ever-changing market, new challengers are emerging. JaTO said that in 2021, Hyundai-Kia's market share in Europe increased by nearly two percentage points to 8.6%, mainly thanks to its SUV and electric models.
