In the 1980s, North Korea's supreme leader, Kim Il Sung, visited China. During the visit, Kim Il Sung mentioned one person to the chief designer: Chai Yun-jin. In North Korean textbooks, Chai Yun-jin is a model hero in the volunteer army. After the ceasefire on the peninsula, Kim Il Sung always wanted to award Chai Yun-jin a medal, but was delayed due to various factors. At this time, 33 years after Chai Yun-jin left the peninsula, Kim Il Sung finally had the opportunity to mention his wish.
After understanding, the chief designer knew that Chai Yunzhen was a subordinate of General Qin Jiwei, so he instructed General Qin Jiwei to find Chai Yunzhen. So, what are Chai Yunzhen's deeds?
Chai Yunzhen's fame lies in the Park Dafeng blockade battle. It was the late spring of 1951, when the famous "Fifth Campaign" broke out between the Volunteers and the U.S. Army. This short engagement caused huge casualties on both sides. However, judging from the situation at that time, continuing to fight was quite unfavorable to our army.
Because the area south of the 38th Line is dominated by plains, and the political power established by the southern authorities has an entangled influence on the people. At that time, our army was in this area and engaged the enemy, which meant that the enemy could obtain supplies through the power of the local authorities, and our army could only rely on the transportation of the rear.
Moreover, the southern region is mostly plains, which is conducive to the effectiveness of the mechanized troops of the US army, while the volunteer army is mostly infantry. If we continue to fight in this way, even if our army can inflict huge casualties on the enemy, it will undoubtedly have to pay a certain price. Therefore, after study, the relevant departments decided to let the large troops go north, using the mountains and plateaus in the north to compete with the enemy.
However, the enemy certainly cannot obediently let the large troops of our army leave. Therefore, our army needs to leave troops to block the enemy's pursuit. Chai Yunzhen's unit received orders to block the enemy - using the terrain around Pu Dafeng to intercept the enemy's pursuit.
The enemy believes that if we can pursue and kill the main force of our army before our army completes its layout in the north or even retreats to the north, it will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the situation. Therefore, for the blocking troops, the US military did not have the patience to entangle with our side, but chose artillery coverage - the so-called artillery coverage, that is, the use of artillery and bombers two angles to cover our army's positions in the sea of fire. The U.S. military plans to use this tactic to quickly open the pursuit and killing channel. Unexpectedly, the 3rd Battalion of the 135th Regiment, which was responsible for blocking the attack, relied on tenacious willpower and consumed five days and five nights with the enemy.
By the morning of the sixth day, two of our hills had been occupied by the Americans, and the defensive line was in jeopardy. So the battalion commander ordered Chai Yunzhen, then the commander of the 8th Company, to be responsible for retaking the hill. At this time, Chai Yunzhen's 8th company, all up and down, except for himself, there were only two soldiers left.
The battalion commander also knew how unrealistic it was to rely on these three men alone to take two hills. Therefore, his two communication soldiers were also assigned to chai Yunzhen's leadership. In this way, Chai Yunzhen led four warriors and began to counterattack the mountain.
Chai Yunzhen felt that he could not charge directly with the warriors. Because there are dozens of American troops on the other side's hill, if they charge directly, they are afraid that they will be killed by the American submachine guns before they can get closer. So Chai Yunzhen and his warriors used the terrain and plants as cover to sneak up on the enemy's position. However, just a dozen meters away from the enemy position, the enemy found Chai Yunzhen. As a result, the enemy opened fire on Chai Yunzhen and others, and the dense firepower crossed into a network of firepower for about an hour - according to military enthusiasts, during the Korean War, the US military consumed thousands of bullets per enemy destroyed on average. The main reason is that the US military does not have the awareness of saving ammunition. This detail can be seen from the aimless strafing at Chai Yunzhen and others.
After the gunfire stopped, Chai Yunzhen continued to lead the fighters to secretly move closer to the enemy position, and when the enemy found Chai Yunzhen and the others again, Chai Yunzhen and the others also launched strafing at the enemy, and one of the fighters also directly rushed to the enemy's position, destroyed the enemy on the position with a submachine gun, and recaptured a hill for the volunteer army. However, at this time, chai Yunzhen also had three warriors on his side who had died.
So Chai Yunzhen let the surviving warrior guard the position, and he went to retake the remaining hill.
It is already difficult for five people to retake a mountain, and the success rate of one person retaking a mountain is already minimal. But Chai Yunzhen didn't have time to think about it so much. Considering the shortage of ammunition, he turned over four grenades from the american soldiers who had been killed. So Chai Yunzhen took the light machine gun and carried these four grenades to the enemy's position. Killed a large number of enemies with two grenades. Chai Yunzhen felt that the most important thing he should do was to take down the enemy's front-line command. This maximizes the safety of the battalion commander's side. So Chai Yunzhen groped all the way to find the enemy's headquarters. Chai Yunzhen threw the third grenade into the enemy's headquarters and blew up the enemy's command post. Naturally, all the officers in the command post were killed.
Chai Yunzhen looked around the hill and found three enemies, and after Chai Yunzhen killed them, the remaining black soldier also touched Chai Yunzhen's side. By the time Chai Yunzhen found out, it was too late to shoot. Chai Yunzhen had intended to pull the last grenade and die with the black soldier, but he expected that in the fight, the grenade would be sent far away. Chai Yunzhen had to engage in hand-to-hand combat with black people. Objectively speaking, black people are much better physically than others. During the fight, Chai Yunzhen's head was stoned many times by the black man, and the finger was also bitten off by the black man, leaving him with a lifelong disability. Chai Yunzhen was also in the fight, took the opportunity to pick up the gun, gave the black soldier a shot, and killed the black soldier. Subsequently, Chai Yunzhen also fainted due to injuries and serious injuries.
The U.S. military saw that the plan to pursue our army was no longer successful. So he stopped attacking Park Dafeng. The battalion commander sent people to search and rescue Chai Yunzhen, who was fainting, and transported him back to China for treatment. Chai Yunzhen considered that his fingers had been bitten off and he could no longer become a soldier, so he chose to return to his hometown to work as a farmer in anonymity. It was not until the 1980s, under the search of Qin Jiwei and others, that Chai Yunzhen again got in touch with the original troops and was also awarded the medal by Kim Il Sung.
