"The oriental wind is full of spring", a long text of 10,000 words tells the story of spring

On March 26, 1992, the front page of the Shenzhen Special Administrative Region newspaper published a long-form newsletter entitled "The Oriental Wind Comes full of spring - Comrade Deng Xiaoping's Documentary in Shenzhen." This 10,000-word newsletter sings the prologue to a spring story, and the content of this manuscript is the famous Deng Xiaoping Southern Speech.

Letters and Things, No. 10

From January 18 to February 21, 1992, Comrade Deng Xiaoping inspected Wuchang, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shanghai and other places, and made important speeches along the way. From January 19 to 23, Comrade Deng Xiaoping first came to Shenzhen, which was in the early spring of the south, and everything was striving for newness. The important speech made by Comrade Xiaoping during his inspection in Shenzhen is a landmark event that has set off a new upsurge in reform and opening up. At that time, Chen Xitian, as the deputy editor-in-chief of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Daily, followed Comrade Xiaoping throughout the inspection in Shenzhen and became a witness and recorder of history.

After five days, Comrade Xiaoping inspected Shenzhen and every scene and sentence lingered in Chen Xitian's mind. As soon as he finished writing, Chen Xitian thought of a title, taken from a poem by the Tang Dynasty poet Li He - "The oriental wind comes full of spring", the literary style is remarkable, the momentum is magnificent, just like the rolling spring thunder, awakening the times.

This 10,000-word article, published in the headline of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Daily published on March 26 of that year, quickly aroused a warm response in the society. On March 30, Xinhua News Agency broadcast the full text, and major media such as People's Daily and CCTV reprinted and broadcast it one after another, which had a huge impact at home and abroad, and sent a clear signal to the world that China adheres to reform and opening up.

Later, when he visited abroad, Chen Xitian recalled, his local news colleagues told him that after reading the article, they all thought that Deng Xiaoping's southern speech was a major event in China.

"The greater the cause, the more full of difficulties and obstacles, the more necessary to work hard, the more need to blaze new trails." At the crucial moment of history, Comrade Deng Xiaoping, as the chief architect of China's reform and opening up, profoundly answered many major questions of understanding that have long shackled people's thinking, guided the ship of building socialism with Chinese characteristics to sail to the other side of the light, and also answered the world's questions with a sincere and frank China plan.

From 1992 to 2022, spring to spring, mountains and rivers have changed dramatically. Standing at a new historical starting point and moving toward the second centenary goal, reform has never been given more expectations as it is today. One "story of spring" after another has been written all over the land of China, and generation after generation of Chinese sons and daughters have forged ahead vigorously and stride forward.
