Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea: The rampant US military blew up and killed our villagers, and the volunteers fought back in anger, killing 5,000 enemy people

author:Zhongzi Period History Museum

If there is any battle in the Korean War that made the volunteers the most painful, it must be the Battle of Onjeong.

After the U.S. army launched the Inchon landing, the 6th Infantry Division, which was closest to the Yalu River in the South Korean puppet army, began to advance rapidly north with the support of the American army, hoping to become the first Un Army unit to reach the Yalu River.

Among them, the 7th Regiment of the 6th Division, as the first Unmistakable force to rush to the Yalu River, actually disregarded the rules of engagement and excitedly fired artillery at China, and also let reporters photograph the scene and reported it.

But what they didn't know was that just tens of kilometers away, tens of thousands of angry volunteer soldiers were preparing to destroy them with bayonets and bullets to avenge the unfortunate deaths of Chinese.

After the Un army launched the Inchon landing, the Korean People's Army was defeated by the UN forces in the battle because the logistical line was cut off, and had to quickly retreat north. Realizing that the Korean People's Army could not pose a threat to itself, the South Korean puppet army on the front line, with the support of the Air Force of the United Nations Army, quickly marched north.

On the side of the Chinese Volunteer Army, the commander-in-chief Peng Dehuai had just entered the DPRK and was preparing to dispatch troops to launch an attack on the advancing United Nations army. However, due to the influence of North Korean refugees and enemy aircraft, the forward speed of the troops was affected, and they could not reach the predetermined area in a short period of time.

This situation made Peng Dehuai very angry, but the reality of the situation was not based on personal will, so he could only resist the anger in his heart and wait for the front-line troops to arrive. To everyone's surprise, during this period of delay, the South Korean puppet army crashed into the encirclement of the volunteer army.

At the same time that the volunteers crossed the Yalu River into Korea, the interior of the 6th Division of the South Korean Puppet Army was now advancing at an unprecedented speed toward the south bank of the Yalu River. Among them, the 7th Regiment of the 6th Division, in order to compete for the honor of reaching the Yalu River first, desperately sprinted north at full speed.

If Peng Dehuai's plan was followed, the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army would at this time collide with the 118th Division of the Volunteer Army's 40th Army, which had just crossed the Yalu River. However, because of the blockage of the road by North Korean refugees and the air raids of American fighter jets, the 118th Division of the Volunteer Army's 40th Army was forced to slow down its advance, causing the two armies to pass each other. Seeing that there was no obstacle in the way forward, the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army, which was extremely excited, happily continued to advance under the surveillance of the volunteer army.

Deng Yue, the commander of the 118th Division, wanted to eliminate the rampant 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army in one fell swoop, but then he resisted. Because on October 24, Deng Yue went to Zhisi to receive the task and learned that Commander-in-Chief Peng Dehuai had revised the battle plan.

Commander-in-Chief Peng Dehuai said that because the 38th Army had not yet reached the designated area, it could not complete the encirclement of the enemy army. Therefore, it is necessary to first attack the enemy troops in the Onjeong area, and then use the 6th Division of the South Korean Puppet Army as a decoy to attract large enemy troops into the encirclement.

After receiving the order, Deng Yue immediately returned to the troops and ordered the front-line scouts to report on the enemy's situation. Deng Yue was then pleasantly surprised to find that the two main regiments of the 6th Division of the South Korean Puppet Army were in the attack range of the 118th Division, and the enemy was unaware of their arrival and still advanced without any cover.

So Deng Yue made a bold plan to wipe out the 6th Division of the South Korean puppet army in one fell swoop.

Battle of Wenjing

On 25 October, the 353rd and 354th Regiments of the 118th Division entered the northern part of Onjeong and prepared to ambush the approaching enemy forces. To everyone's surprise, the first unit to engage the enemy was not the 354th Regiment at the front, but the reconnaissance company that had just returned to the command post of the 118th Division.

It turned out that the command post of the 118th Division had just arrived in Beizhen County, around Wenjing, and was surprised to find a small enemy army, riding a car and pulling a cannon to the north. Looking at this strange unit in front of him, Deng Yue even thought that this was a suspicious soldier set up by the enemy to test whether there was an ambush in front.

Deng Yue's caution was justified, because the formation of the marching army in front of him was really strange. The most vulnerable trucks opened the way with the cannons, while the infantry, who were supposed to protect these heavy equipment, followed them piecemeal. In Deng Yue's mind, even the Kuomintang army would not use this formation to march in the theater.

Even stranger, once the small force entered the two water hole areas, it stopped advancing and began to camp and rest. All kinds of abnormal scenes made everyone in the command post of the 118th Division feel very confused. In order to find out the situation, Deng Yue sent a reconnaissance company to the rear of this small force to reconnoiter the location of the enemy's large troops.

Soon the division's reconnaissance company returned, and the large force of the 2nd Regiment of the enemy 6th Division had two hours to reach the two water holes. After Deng Yue learned of this news, he ordered the reconnaissance company of the division and the 3rd Battalion of the 354th Regiment to launch a feint attack on the enemy's small troops in the Liangshuidong area, luring the enemy's large troops into the ambush range of the two regiments in front.

At 10:00 a.m. on 25 October, the division's reconnaissance company launched an attack on the enemy in the area of Liangshuidong, easily annihilating an infantry company and an artillery company. Hearing the gunshots, the commander of the enemy's 2nd Regiment reacted first, and it was the front-line troops that encountered the small KPA units, so he contemptuously sent two infantry companies to support.

Seeing that the enemy had entered the encirclement circle in batches, the 353rd and 354th regiments of the volunteer army, which were ambushed on the side, immediately launched an attack to divide and encircle the enemy army, preparing to attract another group of enemy troops. As a result, the large troops of the 2nd Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army, seeing that they might be surrounded, immediately stopped advancing and hid in the town to wait for help.

Seeing that the enemy was so cooperative, Deng Yue immediately ordered the enemy troops on the outskirts of Wenjing to be completely annihilated, and then launched an attack on the main enemy force. At 3 p.m. on October 25, two battalions of the 2nd Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army were annihilated. Only one infantry battalion and regimental headquarters remained, trapped in The City of Wenjing, waiting for reinforcements.

That night, the 2nd Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army was destroyed, and the 118th Division occupied the Onjeong area, the first battle of the Volunteer Army in the Korean War, which ended in the victory of our army.

However, just as the volunteers were celebrating their victory, a message came from the Yalu River that made all the commanders and fighters of the volunteer army furious. On October 26, the 7th Regiment of the 6th Division of the South Korean Puppet Army, which was passing by the 118th Division, arrived at the Yalu River and fired artillery at China.

Settle an old score

On October 25, while fighting in Onui, the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Army, which was rushing to the Yalu River, accidentally encountered other defeated friendly forces. The officers of the 7th Regiment had thought that the friendly forces had been attacked by small KPA units, but the deserters said in horror:

The men shouted, Chinese! Shoot and don't kill! I'll never forget it for the rest of my life! ”

The officers of the 7th Regiment initially did not believe the news. An officer shouted excitedly:

"The Chinese army is in the war! No way! The U.S. Military Command did not provide such information! ”

In desperation, the commander of the 7th Regiment could only confirm to the rear command by radio. However, they were rebuked by their superiors and asked the 7th Regiment to continue their attack on the Yalu River.

The South Korean officers had intended to disobey military orders and demand that the troops retreat. But the U.S. advisers who accompanied him stopped him and arrogantly told the South Korean army that they were merely deceiving themselves because many of the KPA soldiers spoke Chinese. The soldiers were only frightened and deliberately said this in order to evade responsibility.

The South Korean officer immediately quarreled with the U.S. adviser, who believed that the South Korean army was just passively avoiding the war, and the U.S. adviser also said that if the 7th Regiment disobeyed the order, he would report to the command to remove the officer from the position of regimental commander. Under the pressure of American advisers, the South Korean 7th Regiment could only continue to advance north.

On 26 October, the 7th Regiment successfully reached the south side of the Yalu River. And in order to show their "greatness", the U.S. military advisers accompanying the team also encouraged the artillery of the 7th Regiment to shoot at the other side of the Yalu River.

Chinese villages on the north side of the Yalu River were attacked without warning, killing several innocent farmers preparing for the winter.

After the shelling, the South Korean army could not wait to announce to the world that they had successfully occupied the south bank of the Yalu River and punished the Chinese army.

After the news of the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Army firing at China reached the General Headquarters of the Volunteer Army, an angry Commander-in-Chief Peng Dehuai ordered the 118th Division to annihilate the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army and eliminate all enemies on the Sino-North Korean border. Deng Yue, who received the order, immediately led the 118th Division to march north.

In order to buy time, the 118th Division did not choose to take the road, but drew a straight line on the map. They would cross several mountains directly and directly attack the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army. After two days and nights of rapid marching, the 118th Division arrived at the Guchangdong area on October 28 and began to attack the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army.

Deng Yue, the commander of the initial 118th Division, believed that the next battle would be very difficult. Because the 118th Division had been fighting continuously, ammunition and food had not been replenished, and after two days of forced marching, many fighters could not hold on to their physical strength. Therefore, when the battle was about to break out, Deng Yue also rushed to the front-line troops to cheer up the soldiers.

But as soon as he arrived at the front line, Deng Yue didn't feel right, why was there no tension on the enemy's side? So he hurried to the scouts to inquire. And the scout's report made Deng Yue feel both happy and a little crying. It turned out that after the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army arrived at the Yalu River, it camped in the same place and began to rest. The whole unit seemed very lax, and even the sentries were not arranged.

And when the 118th Division had just arrived at Guchangdong, the scouts also found that the vanguard of the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army had just finished adding gasoline to the car. After listening to the scout's report, Deng Yue immediately made a decision to wait for the enemy troops to leave and then choose the opportunity to launch an attack.

In the early morning of October 29, the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army began to retreat south in chaos. With Deng Yue's order, the soldiers of the 118th Division, who were ambushed on the road and the commanding heights, immediately launched an attack on the enemy. In the first hour of the battle, the enemy was cut into three parts by the volunteer army, and some of the enemy saw that victory was hopeless and immediately tried to break through.

In the afternoon of the same day, the 7th Regiment of the South Korean Puppet Army completely collapsed and began to scatter and flee. After a night of capture operations, the 118th Division successfully completed the task assigned by the Volunteer Command, severely damaging the enemy troops who violated the Chinese border.

In the 4-day battle, the 118th Division successfully annihilated the main force of the 6th Division of the South Korean Puppet Army, killing more than 5,000 enemy troops and capturing more than 1,000 prisoners.

But the end of the Battle of Oni did not mean that the 118th Division could rest. Over the next month, the 118th Division, part of the Volunteer 40th Army, would pursue fleeing Un troops south until the end of the First Campaign.
