The memorial and burial ceremony of Academician Wu Mengchao and his wife Professor Wu Peiyu was held in Shanghai

On the morning of January 20th, the memorial and burial ceremony of Wu Mengchao, the "Father of Chinese Liver Surgery", academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of the Second Military Medical University, and president of the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University (Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital), and his wife Wu Peiyu was held in Qingpu Fushou Garden, Shanghai.

On May 22, 2021, 99-year-old academician Wu Mengchao passed away. Previously, his wife, Professor Wu Peiyu, had also passed away. The couple is a hepatobiliary surgery specialist and an obstetrics and gynecology specialist. On the morning of January 20, the couple, who had been together for 60 years, laid resting together in Shanghai Fushou Garden.

In 1941, he and she were classmates at the Affiliated Middle School of Tongji University in the suburbs of Kunming, and a hand-knitted sweater pulled them into the distance between them, and in 1943, they were both admitted to the Medical School of National Tongji University. With the support and companionship of his lover, Wu Mengchao devoted his life to the medical cause of the motherland: established a disciplinary system of liver surgery in the mainland, and at the age of 97, he still fought under the shadowless lamp, and the main knife treated more than 16,000 patients.

At the ceremony site, a video recording the life of Wu Mengchao's legendary life was played. At the memorial service, the organizers used holograms to present Elder Wu's voice and smile, reproduced Elder Wu's voice through technical means, and conducted "time-space dialogue" with his students, nurses, assistants and other people around him at the scene.

As a student of Wu Mengchao, Shen Feng, a professor at the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University, "reported" to Elder Wu: "Under your words and deeds, we have established the world's first individualized staging standard for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, achieving international leading long-term efficacy; at the same time, establishing a new technology program for postoperative recurrence prevention and treatment of liver cancer. Without your teachings and strong support, these findings would not have been possible. ”

Liu Youyou, director of the Instrument Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital, is Wu Mengchao's secretary, and he shed tears and told everyone about Wu Lao's dream of pinning on the new hospital in Anting.

More than 20 representatives of the three generations of wu lao students of the old, middle and young generations lit candles in their hands in turn to send Wu Lao on his last journey. They kept in mind The teachings of Elder Wu: "There is no shortage of experts in this world, there is no lack of authority, what is lacking is a 'person' - a person who is willing to give himself." When you help others, remember that medicine is sometimes exhausted, and only inexhaustible love can illuminate a suffering soul. ”

At the burial site, the commemorative bronze statues of Academician Wu Mengchao and Professor Wu Peiyu were unveiled. In the lower left corner of the bronze statue of Academician Wu Mengchao is a model of Wu Lao's right hand, the index finger and ring knuckle of this hand are different from ordinary people, and they are traces of years of fighting side by side with scalpels.
