Shanghai, 20 Jan (China Youth Daily) -- This morning, the memorial and burial ceremony for Comrade Wu Mengchao, "father of Chinese liver surgery," academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of the Second Military Medical University, and president of the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University (Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital), and his wife, Professor Wu Peiyu, were held in FushouYuan, Qingpu, Shanghai.
At 13:02 on May 22, 2021, 99-year-old academician Wu Mengchao passed away. Previously, his wife, Professor Wu Peiyu, had also passed away. The couple is a hepatobiliary specialist and an obstetrics and gynecologist. This morning, the couple, who have been together for 60 years, were buried together in the East Garden of Shanghai's Fushou Garden.

In 1941, Wu Mengchao and Wu Peiyu were classmates at the Affiliated Middle School of Tongji University in the suburbs of Kunming, and a hand-knitted sweater pulled into the distance between them; in 1943, they were both admitted to the medical school of National Tongji University, only because she said that studying medicine is good, engineering construction is a contribution to the country, and studying medicine is more contributing to mankind. With the support and companionship of his lover, Wu Mengchao devoted his life to the medical cause of the motherland - establishing the discipline system of liver surgery in the mainland, still fighting under the shadowless lamp at the age of 97, and treating more than 16,000 patients with the main knife.

"Dad often said that the patient is the doctor's food and clothing parents, as long as the patient needs him to do, he is happy to agree, never consider his honor and time, only consider how to do it is good for the patient, how to do it can reduce the burden of the patient, so that the patient can live longer."
Cong Wenming, a student of Wu Mengchao and former director of the Pathology Department of the Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, told reporters at the memorial meeting that for more than 40 years, he witnessed the process of Wu Lao's establishment of the pathology department of the hospital little by little, promoted the establishment and development of liver surgery and related disciplines, and felt his forward-looking character as a great scientist. "He never wanted to leave the operating table, the first surgery of the Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital Anting New Hospital was done by him, and he was more than 90 years old, often driving from the Yangpu campus for more than 1 hour, and he did not feel tired. When we celebrated his birthday a few years ago, he still said that he would work with his colleagues and students to promote liver surgery to achieve the fifth take-off. At the burial site, the commemorative bronze statues of Academician Wu Mengchao and Professor Wu Peiyu stood majestically. The leaders of the Naval Military Medical University and Wu Ling, the daughter of Elder Wu, jointly unveiled the bronze statue. Academician Wu Mengchao on the bronze statue wore a military uniform that he had loved all his life and looked into the distance, and his peaceful eyes were full of determination. On a stone stele on the right side of the bronze statue, the chat condenses the achievements of Wu Lao's life, and in the lower left corner is placed the model of Wu Lao's right hand, the index finger and ring knuckle of this hand are different from ordinary people, and they are the traces of years of fighting side by side with the scalpel, which makes people sigh.
