"We are following your footsteps, your brilliance and the galaxy will last forever..." On the morning of January 20, the memorial and burial ceremony of Comrade Wu Mengchao, the "Father of Chinese Liver Surgery", academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of the Second Military Medical University, and president of the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University (Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital), and his wife Professor Wu Peiyu was held in FushouYuan, Qingpu, Shanghai.
At the scene of the ceremony, a life movie recording Wu Mengchao's legendary life was played. In the picture, Elder Wu looks back on his life like this:
I was very fortunate that I had four choices at that time: I chose to return to China, my ideals had a deep soil; I chose to practice medicine, and my pursuit had a platform for struggle; I chose to follow the party, and my life had lofty faith; I chose to join the army, and I grew up with a great school. If there is any secret to success, I have taken the right path, it is the secret. ”

At 13:02 on May 22, 2021, 99-year-old academician Wu Mengchao passed away. Previously, his wife, Professor Wu Peiyu, had also passed away. The couple is a hepatobiliary specialist and an obstetrics and gynecologist. This morning, the couple, who have been together for 60 years, were buried together in the East Garden of Fushou Garden in Shanghai, the Wind Lotus Garden.
With the support and companionship of his lover, Wu Mengchao devoted his life to the medical cause of the motherland - establishing the discipline system of liver surgery in the mainland, still fighting under the shadowless lamp at the age of 97, and treating more than 16,000 patients with the main knife.
At the memorial service, through hologram technology, Elder Wu's voice and smile were presented on the spot, and he conducted a "time and space dialogue" with his students, nurses, assistants and other people around him.
When the lights dimmed, Elder Wu's voice came out, "Shen Feng, how is it now?" Any good news? ”
As a student of Wu Mengchao, Professor Shen Feng of the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Military Medical University has been focusing on the treatment of liver cancer over the years.
His voice trembled:
Elder Wu, the clinical research institute of our hospital was officially established on December 18 last year, which is a platform that integrates clinical treatment and research, is the continuation and development of your hospital-institute integration model, and is also a measure to implement Shanghai's scientific and technological innovation policy, give full play to the advantages of clinical specialties, and accelerate the integration of clinical research with the international leading level. Elder Wu, we will lay a solid foundation under your foundation, under the guidance of your scientific spirit, down-to-earth, conscientious, one by one to do a good job in clinical diagnosis and treatment and research, and strive to make achievements worthy of your concern and expectations. ”
"Casually, how is the hospital doing now, and how is the development of the new hospital in Anting?" I'd love to go back and have a look! Elder Wu's voice came out again. Anting New Hospital is the Anting Branch of the Third Affiliated Hospital of naval military medical university. As Wu Mengchao's secretary, Liu Liu, director of the Instrument Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital, casually shed tears and told everyone about Wu Lao's dream of pinning on the new hospital in Anting.
In the spring of 2006, Wu Mengchao, who was 84 years old, together with six other academicians, submitted a report to the relevant ministries and commissions of the state: "We propose to take the spirit and operation mechanism of the 'two bombs and one satellite' and the 'Shenzhou VI' as an example to form a liver cancer research cooperation group that breaks the boundaries of departments and disciplines..."
That year, Wu Mengchao had just won the country's highest science and technology award, becoming the first medical scientist to receive this honor. More than ten years later, lying on the hospital bed, Elder Wu is most concerned about the construction and development of the Anting Branch. He said, "When I'm well, I'm going to go to the branch." ”
More than 20 representatives of the three generations of old, middle-aged and young Wu students lit up the lampposts they held in turn to send Elder Wu on his last journey.
"We follow your footsteps, your brilliance and galaxy will last forever..." On the way to the Wind lotus garden, the song "Stars" has always accompanied. This song was composed by 5 young cadets of the Naval Military Medical University, in order to deeply commemorate Elder Wu and pay tribute to his legendary and great life.
At the burial site, the commemorative bronze statues of Academician Wu Mengchao and Professor Wu Peiyu stood majestically. The leaders of the Naval Military Medical University and Wu Ling, the daughter of Elder Wu, jointly unveiled the bronze statue. Academician Wu Mengchao on the bronze statue wore a military uniform that he had loved all his life and looked into the distance, and his peaceful eyes were full of determination. In the lower left corner of the bronze statue is a model of Wu Lao's right hand, which is different from ordinary people with the index finger and ring knuckle of this hand, and is a trace of years of fighting side by side with a scalpel.
Today, Fang Honghui, the author of the book "Wu Mengchao", also came to send Wu Lao on his last journey. He said, "I just want to say a word to him, Elder Wu, you are indeed a good doctor with the most conscience, and we will always miss you in our hearts." ”
Flowers pave the way to farewell, and memories stretch through the ages. Academician Wu Mengchao is gone, but his spirit will remain forever in the world, just like the "Wu Mengchao Star" in the vast universe is still brilliant.
