At 13:02 on May 22, 2021, Academician Wu Mengchao passed away at the age of 99 due to ineffective medical treatment. Professor Wu Peiyu, the wife of Academician Wu Mengchao, died on August 5, 2011 at the age of 89 due to ineffective medical treatment.
Academician Wu Mengchao and Professor Wu Peiyu are two couples, one is a hepatobiliary surgery expert, and the other is an obstetrics and gynecology expert. They met in 1941 at the Affiliated Middle School of Tongji University in the suburbs of Kunming, and were both admitted to the Medical School of National Tongji University. In 1951, Wu Mengchao and Wu Peiyu married, and after that, they fell in love for 60 years.

At the memorial service, Academician Wu Mengchao conducted a "time-space dialogue" with his colleagues through holographic projection technology. After the memorial service, the relatives of Academician Wu Mengchao picked up the spirit box and went with the honor guard to the Fengheyuan Cemetery in Fushouyuan, Shanghai, to bury the two elderly people. The relatives and friends who came to see them off followed them all the way and did not want to send them off.
At the Fengheyuan Cemetery, family members and colleagues unveiled a memorial statue of Wu Mengchao and Wu Peiyu, a pair of two people standing side by side with their arms in arm, the sun sprinkled on them, surrounded by green grass and flowers.
Next to their memorial statue, there is also a small sculpture of a pair of hands holding surgical forceps in the process. It is with these hands that Academician Wu Mengchao has treated more than 16,000 patients in his 78-year medical career. After years of surgery, Wu Lao's right hand has been deformed, and the first joint of the index finger is turned outward, like a hook, which is not suitable for signing and eating, but this is the smoothest posture with a scalpel.
At about 11:00 a.m., the ashes placement ceremony of Academician Wu Mengchao and his wife Wu Peiyu officially began. The family members of Academician Wu Mengchao invited the spirit box into the stone cave for burial, and after the ceremonial workers sealed the cave, the family of Academician Wu Mengchao carefully wiped the tombstone and quietly mourned. Subsequently, the relatives, friends and guests attending the ceremony stepped forward in turn and bowed to Academician Wu Mengchao and his wife Professor Wu Peiyu.
At the scene of the event, 81-year-old Professor Chen Xunru was interviewed by reporters. He said that he was the first graduate student brought by Academician Wu Mengchao after the resumption of the college entrance examination, and he flew from Kunming yesterday afternoon to participate in the teacher's burial ceremony.
Talking about his three-year experience of studying under Wu Laomen, Chen Xunru said: "He (Academician Wu Mengchao) is very kind and very concerned about students, but he is also very good at criticizing people, but sometimes you have to admire that what he said is correct. Especially once, during an operation, he cut the left liver lobe and then the right liver lobe, and we all said that he was really bold and skilled. ”
In addition to his superb medical skills, Chen Xunru was also impressed by Elder Wu's care and care for patients. From studying and working, for 40 years, Cong Wenming has been accompanying Elder Wu and witnessing Academician Wu Mengchao establish and develop the Department of Pathology from scratch little by little.
Referring to Elder Wu, Cong Wenming said: "He loves his hepatobiliary surgery career deeply, and he never wanted to leave the operating table. Even after retiring, I still remember the development of hepatobiliary surgery and still want to go to the operating room for surgery. When we gave him a birthday two years ago, he still said that he would work with his colleagues and students to achieve the fifth take-off of hepatobiliary surgery in China. ”
