On December 28 of the same year, the Fifth Intermediate People's Court of Chongqing Municipality rendered a verdict sentencing two people to death for intentional homicide and deprivation of political rights for life.

The Paper reported that the personnel participating in the first-instance trial of the case said that after the first-instance judgment was pronounced, the presiding judge asked Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen whether they appealed. Zhang said at the time to "consider it", but Ip has not replied, and now the two have appealed within the statutory appeal period.
Soon after the verdict was pronounced, Ye Chengchen had a new lawyer, a local veteran criminal defense lawyer in Chongqing. The lawyer said the case was too sensitive and he could not disclose any information. According to an informed source close to Zhang Bo's family, after the incident, Zhang Bo's family had entrusted a lawyer for him, but after Zhang Bo admitted to committing the crime, the family felt that it was of little significance and did not continue to hire a lawyer. At the beginning of the first-instance trial, it was also the legal support lawyer who defended Zhang Bo in court.
