In 2021, China's automobile production and sales reached 26.082 million units and 26.275 million units, respectively, an increase of 3.4% and 3.8% year-on-year, ending a downward trend of three consecutive years. Sales of new energy vehicles reached 3.521 million units, an increase of 1.6 times year-on-year, ranking first in the world for seven consecutive years.
1. December car sales fell 1.6% year-on-year
In December, production of automobiles totaled 2.907 million units, up 12.5% and 10.5% sequentially, while production increased by 2.4% y/y and sales decreased by 1.6% y/y.
From January to December, production and sales totaled 26.082 million units and 26.275 million units, up 3.4% and 3.8% year-on-year, respectively, down 0.1 percentage points from January to November, respectively.
(1) Passenger car sales in December increased by 2.0% year-on-year
In December, production and sales of passenger cars totaled 2.527 million units, up 8.4% y/y, and sales totaled 2.422 million units, up 2.0% y/y. By model, production and sales of sedans totaled 1.179 million units and 1.126 million units, up 13.2% and 7.5% year-on-year, respectively; production and sales of SUVs totaled 1.171 million units and 1.141 million units, up 4.8% and 0.3% year-on-year, respectively; MPV production was completed 128,000 units, up 2.4% year-on-year, sales were completed 113,000 units, down 20.8% year-on-year; and crossover passenger car production was completed 49,000 units, up 3.2% year-on-year. Sales totaled 41,000 units, down 11.8% y/y.
From January to December, production and sales of passenger cars totaled 21.408 million units, up 7.1% y/y, and sales totaled 21.482 million units, up 6.5% y/y. By model, production and sales of sedans totaled 9.908 million units and 9.934 million units, up 7.8% and 7.1% year-on-year, respectively; production and sales of SUVs totaled 10.030 million units and 10.101 million units, up 6.7% and 6.8% year-on-year, respectively; MPV production and sales totaled 1.073 million units and 1.055 million units, up 6.1% and 0.1% year-on-year, respectively; crossover passenger car production and sales reached 397,000 units and 391,000 units, up 0.6% year-on-year, respectively. and 0.8%.
In December, Chinese brand passenger cars sold a total of 1.137 million units, up 10.0% year-on-year, accounting for 46.9% of total passenger car sales, and its share increased by 3.4 percentage points.
From January to December, The cumulative sales of Chinese brand passenger cars were 9.543 million units, an increase of 23.1% year-on-year, accounting for 44.4% of the total passenger car sales, and the share increased by 6.0 percentage points year-on-year. Among them, sedan sales were 3.151 million units, an increase of 61.4% year-on-year, with a market share of 31.7%; SUVs sold 5.280 million units, an increase of 12.6% year-on-year, with a market share of 52.3%; MPV sales of 720,000 units, down 0.3% year-on-year, with a market share of 68.3%.
(2) December commercial vehicle sales down 20.1% y/y
In December, production of commercial vehicles totaled 380,000 units, down 25.3% y/y, and sales totaled 364,000 units, down 20.1% y/y. By model, truck production and sales totaled 331,000 units, down 26.1% and 21.2% year-on-year, respectively, while production and sales of buses totaled 50,000 units and 54,000 units, down 19.6% and 13.6% year-on-year, respectively.
From January to December, production and sales of commercial vehicles totaled 4.674 million units, down 10.7% y/y, and sales totaled 4.793 million units, down 6.6% y/y. By model, truck production and sales totaled 4.166 million units and 4.288 million units, down 12.8% and 8.5% year-on-year, respectively, while passenger car production and sales totaled 508,000 units and 505,000 units, up 12.2% and 12.6% year-on-year, respectively.
Second, in December, the sales volume of new energy vehicles increased by 1.1 times year-on-year
In December, production and sales of new energy vehicles totaled 518,000 units and 531,000 units, up 1.2 times and 1.1 times year-on-year, respectively, with a market penetration rate of 19.1%. By model, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles were 434,000 units and 448,000 units, an increase of 1.1 times year-on-year; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 84,000 units and 82,000 units, up 1.6 times and 1.2 times year-on-year, respectively; and the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 627 units and 486 units, respectively, an increase of 1.4 times and 1.1 times year-on-year, respectively.
From January to December, the production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 3.545 million units and 3.521 million units, respectively, an increase of 1.6 times year-on-year, and the market penetration rate was 13.4%, an increase of 8 percentage points year-on-year. By model, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles reached 2.942 million units and 2.916 million units, up 1.7 times and 1.6 times year-on-year, respectively; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 601,000 units and 603,000 units, up 1.3 times and 1.4 times year-on-year, respectively; and the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 0.2 million units, up 48.7% and 35.0% year-on-year, respectively.
Third, from January to November, the main business income of key enterprises increased by 1.7% year-on-year
From January to November, the key enterprises (groups) in the automobile industry achieved a total of 3,588.50 billion yuan in main business income, an increase of 1.7% year-on-year, an increase of 1.9 percentage points lower than that in 1-10 months; the cumulative total profit and tax of 435.03 billion yuan, an increase of 0.4% year-on-year, an increase of 0.4 percentage points over 1-10 months.
Iv. Automobile exports in December increased by 54.0% year-on-year
In December, 223,000 vehicles were exported, up 54.0% year-on-year. By model, 187,000 units were exported, up 61.2% year-on-year. Commercial vehicle exports totaled 36,000 units, up 25.0% y/y. Exports of new energy vehicles totaled 18,000 units, up 20.1% year-on-year.
From January to December, 2.015 million vehicles were exported, up 1.0 times year-on-year. By model, passenger car exports were 1.614 million units, up 1.1 times year-on-year, and commercial vehicles were exported 402,000 units, up 70.7% year-on-year. Exports of new energy vehicles totaled 310,000 units, up 3.0 times year-on-year.
